About Diana
I have just completed a year long contract working as a math and science teacher for 6-8th grade non speaking autistic students at a private school. While working on my master's degree in Speech Language Pathology, I began working with people with special needs, and teaching self-advocacy, which is the most important thing you can get from language. My passion for learning and teaching led me to working with the students in this most recent school who needed both language and lessons, and working with them on their curriculum, especially once we had to be creative virtually in order to hold the attention of students with special needs, has shown me my own abilities in teaching the magic in everyday math and science, and connecting numbers and facts to everyday life.

It is important to break down the steps of a concept so that students are not just doing things because it is the next step, but because they know why it should be the next step. I like to make sure my examples match something that has to do with the real world when teaching math and science, and I try to include how using these tools can affect them now, and talk about what kinds of futures they can see for themselves by using these skills in different jobs. Using additional media is also helpful to keep everyone interested and thinking about concepts in more that one way, and I have found there are still simple labs that can be done virtually given enough prep time, for example asking students to bring a toilet paper tube, rubber band, scissor, pen, and cotton ball or marshmallow can turn into a lab about distance, angles, force, direction, or several other topics, and just be fun.
