About James
I took my first Spanish class in High School because it was required. In Florida, where I live, Spanish is the second most common language. Many people here don't speak English at all. They only speak Spanish, especially in Miami. When I went to college, I studied Spanish because I had learned it pretty well. In fact, I was able to get AP credit and skip some grades in it, which helped me get through college faster, and I took some advanced courses in it. After graduating, I didn't use it but still lived in Florida and always wanted to speak it fluently. Fortunately, I was able to find some good teaching resources on the Internet, but not all of them were very good. I managed to brush up on my Spanish and now I know it even better than when I was in college. I would like my students to help me learn it even better by choosing subjects we can talk about. When you improve, I improve. Speaking multiple languages is useful when looking for work in Florida. In addition to teaching Spanish I study philosophy and have some really cool inventions. I am married and have two grown children and my wife is disabled. I just recently got another college degree at Arizona State. I really like school and will be a student for life. Most people don't like school. I didn't when I was young but now I can't learn enough. Don't you wish you could just take a smart pill and suddenly learn everything? It doesn't work that way. But by developing just a few little habits, you can learn anything you set your mind to. I'll show you how and it won't be hard. You'll see!

- I teach beginning Spanish to native English speakers from kindergarten to college. - I create personalized practice charts online. - I build vocabulary around student's interests. - I use a cross-dimensional method that provides quick mastery over parts of speech, conjugations and preposition pairs. - I teach irregular words in groups only after mastery of the regular is achieved. - I introduce the subjunctive early and naturally by practicing chunks based on student interests. - I provide tools and technology for further study. - Expect to move from beginner to intermediate level in just a few months. - Spanish listening is an intermediate level skill that is achieved by learning to speak first. I don't overwhelm students with what will sound like gibberish when they first hear it but I do point them to the best sources for practicing their listening in the latter portion of the course. - Students learn at their own pace but will learn very quickly and accurately. There is no reason to try to speak rapidly at the beginning level. - Students speak out loud during sessions and repeat after teacher. There is muscle memory involved in learning and the dialog technique speeds up memory retention and speed itself. - Repetition is turned into dialog through online exercises. - A typical lesson plan will introduce a number of words the student is interested in. It will then look at the various ways those words can work together as a subject. There will be some dialog with the teacher 1-1 and some reading. The student will tell the teacher what subject they wish to study before the lesson begins so that the teacher can prepare the lesson. For instance, if the student wants to talk about baseball, the teacher will prepare a lesson based on that theme, having first assessed the student's current ability in using parts of speech.
