About Sophia

I am a freelance Theatre Designer and tutor with a degree from Warwick University, and Masters degree from Wimbledon College of Arts. Across my three years of self-employment I have taken on a range of tutoring jobs. In the 2018 Summer Term I privately tutored a boy studying Drama A-Level, who was struggling a lot with the course. Working together, we were able to improve his final result by 2 grades. I also run an 8 week workshop series for Drama A Level Students at Wimbledon High, to help them with the design element of the exam specification. Each student finishes the workshop course with finalised designs which they then present to me (and receive feedback). I am also a tutor for 'Union Tuition', and am currently running 10 sets (a total of 40 students) of History classes for students in Beijing over Zoom. Finally, I work freelance for Italia Conti Academy of Performing Arts as a dissertation tutor. I teach the students about approaching design for their performances. As well as a practical focus, I also advice the students’ written submission. Aside from these employments, I also design for school productions (Ibstock Place School, Dulwich College) and work as a supervisor for a youth theatre group (Young Pleasance) at the Edinburgh Fringe. As a result, I work confidently with children/young adults as I have obtained a lot of experience.

Teaching remains the only job where I am able to gain the same fulfilment that I do when designing. Especially when tutoring English or Theatre, it still feels connected to my industry work and allows me to draw on my own experiences. My design workshops at Wimbledon High were a success as I was able to provide a plethora of visual stimulus and references which held the attention of the class and got them enthusiastic about the course. The class were always really excited for our sessions which I found extremely rewarding. I always aim to keep students engaged and motivated, so that the sessions become both enjoyable as well as informative.

Having completed my A Levels in 2012, I have eight years of life and industry experience to make me a better teacher to students. However, it was recent enough that I can still relate and connect with the students about how the current exam systems work and the pressure a lot of students are put under. I also have an understanding of the national curriculum through my work in schools.
