About Stephanie
I am a young-at-heart fifty-year-old who recently graduated from the Southern New Hampshire University Online Creative Writing and English Bachelor of Arts program. During the program, I completed a poetry collection, a short story, and the first three chapters of my first nonfiction book on astrology. I finished my degree with a 3.6 GPA. Consistent hard work and a positive attitude kept my grades high throughout the undergraduate experience, an effort that was recognized when Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, invited me to join their esteemed organization. I did so as a lifetime member.
I have been teaching in various capacities for over 20 years. I homeschooled my oldest son from kindergarten through eighth grade. I taught private cello lessons and worked as a substitute teacher for three years. I also taught religious education classes (k-8) as part of the Unitarian Universalist Church for five or so years. Other teaching experience includes first year violin and viola, beginning level vocals, beginning through intermediate meditation, and beginning through intermediate yoga lessons. The wide variety of subjects and ages of the students with whom I have worked makes me flexible, knowledgeable, and experienced with many learning styles and effective methods of approach.

I use the Socratic method to encourage my students toward critical thinking. Student questions lead to conversation, which inspires self-driven insight and increases self-confidence. A typical lesson starts with a brief, personal check-in. From there, the student is encouraged to summarize what was covered in the previous session, and then we review key points to fill in any learning gaps. A new concept is then introduced, which builds on what has already been learned. There is always room for adjusting teaching techniques and approaches to enhance learning and understanding of content. My overall philosophy is that questions are welcome and should be encouraged, because an open environment for expressing curiosity allows for the highest levels of learning. I am most skilled at teaching reading, reading comprehension, how to write effective essays, how to conduct scholarly research for academic research papers, and creative writing (both nonfiction and fiction). Lessons in editing and proofreading are included as a natural and necessary part of writing. My lessons are most appropriate for grades 8-12.
