About Michael

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching. I meet my students, understand what is likely to work best for them, and formulate a strategy accordingly. I start with individual needs and work from there.

Is there any other way?

Unfortunately, there is.

Some teachers approach individual students as they would a class of thirty. it's a one-way ticket to boredom and alienation unless the learner just so happens to click with that particular style.

And most do not, which is what led to me getting involved in this world.

I read Modern Languages at the University of Bristol (UK) and am a qualified English teacher (TEFL).

And a language goon.

While I'm not going to be the life and soul of a full-on shindig at the local hostelry, I do know that ‘full on’ when preceding and modifying a noun is always hyphenated.

My starting point is straightforward – sentences are either well written or, well, written.

We all have a stab at writing, but nobody is perfect. After decades of syntactic swinging, it’s now time for the Anglophone world to start practising safe text.

I first started teaching informally while living abroad, helping people to navigate the trickier chicanes of the English language. I later helped native speakers tackle grammar, spelling, and punctuation as well as unpacking English as a second language for non-native speakers. I also undertake voluntary work supporting newcomers to the UK and helping them get onto whatever ladder will support them living their best lives.

Rather disturbingly, my specialist area is punctuation, particularly the use of the comma. it's hardly rock 'n' roll, but doing it right elevates your language several levels.

As an aside, I wrote a book called Just Like Grammar Used To Make, which was designed to provide support in a non-technical way and to make the journey everything that your school years weren't.

The book gives a flavour of my credentials, so please do head over to Kindle Unlimited for a free flick-through.
