My philosophy towards teaching starts with developing a solid understanding of the basics. This underpins the fundamental essentials to get to grips with difficult concepts later on.
Children need activities that help them to make connections. I do this using concrete examples (practical activities) right through to using the efficient written methods, as used in the new mathematics curriculum (post 2014) once they have mastered the theory.
Connections can be made, not just through seemingly meaningless symbols and mathematical terminology, but also through worked practical examples that can be done at home or through alternative pictorial methods.
