About Ryan
For 17 years, I have helped students from grade school to college overcome their dread of the blank page. Academic papers, college application personal statements, and timed essays for standardized tests constitute the majority of my tutoring work. My students usually go on to their first choice universities, such as Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Chicago, but I have worked with clients in different situations as well. Some were preparing to attend rabbinical school. Others were striving to obtain their GED while awaiting trial on Rikers Island.

In my one-on-one work, I take students on their own terms, using a variety of strategies to inspire and encourage. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is to assess each student’s particular facility with the craft. To some extent, communicating with my students mirrors the relationship between writer and reader: I don’t want to confuse them by pressing too fine a point, but I don’t want to condescend to them either. While there are plenty of useful general tips—let every word tell, writing is rewriting, trust the process—it's best to get to know the student and tailor lessons according to specific strengths and weaknesses.
There is no need to pull punches: writing is a complicated matter and it takes time to improve. To demystify the process for my students, I break it down to its parts and assess each part
individually, emphasizing the early intimidating stages of critical thinking. I encourage my students to relish the freedom of brainstorming on paper as I have found that writing by hand
expedites the search for patterns, causal links, and associations. We all need as much positive reinforcement as we can get and underlining, numbering, and drawing arrows, taken together,
make for a convincing picture of real thinking in action. I also remind students that meaning is everywhere, though sometimes it takes a little creativity to find that which speaks most
personally to each one of us.
