About Mari

I am a science-minded PhD student currently pursuing a career in research, but my passion for education has always extended well beyond a single discipline. Alongside science, I have a deep love for reading, music, and the arts, and from a young age I competed in public speaking (even winning several competitions at national level). This later evolved into British Parliamentary-style debating, where I served as a Training Officer in my second and third year at NWU, helping fellow students develop critical thinking, argumentation, and confidence. As a native Afrikaans speaker who studied in English, I am acutely aware of the challenges students face when learning in or between these languages. I find particular joy in breaking down complex language concepts such as grammar, into clear, intuitive explanations that finally “click.” In addition, I have both formal training and lived experience working with neurodiverse students, and I strongly believe that adapting teaching methods to suit different learning styles can make a meaningful difference to academic outcomes. My goal is always to help students feel capable, understood, and confident in their ability to learn.

About the lesson

Learning works best when it finally makes sense to you - and that’s exactly what my lessons are designed to do. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all teaching or parrot learning that disappears after a test. Instead, we'll work together to understand concepts properly, build confidence and make learning fun!

I am a native Afrikaans speaker and I've completed my schooling in English since Gr.8 so I am in a unique position where I understand the struggles students from both sides face when learning new languages.
