Applicant name: Joachim Koomson
My Experience, skills and training, in either paid or unpaid work, that makes me suitable for the post.
I have completed the Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) and have been awarded the Qualify Teacher Status (QTS) by the DfEE after passing the government skill test in ICT, English and Maths. In addition, I have also successfully completed Masters Degree in Chemistry.
BEXLEY BUISINESS ACADEMY: Science teacher-teaching KS3, ks4 science and A-level Chemistry, Had a role of Deputy Head of science 2ic. Form tutor for a group of challenging year 7 students. At these roles, at Bexley academy, I ensured the highest standards within the science department as far as teaching and learning are concerned by:
• Demonstrating great enthusiasm for science, promoting it throughout the school and encouraging departmental colleagues to do so, too. • Demonstrating strong knowledge and understanding of the concepts, skills and content of science but in particular Chemistry. • Delivering good lessons throughout all key stages. Evidence from the Assistant/deputy head teacher, HMI and Ofsted supports this. • Liaising closely with the Head of science in particular over academic matters.
• Ensuring that students are entered for the correct exams and checking that all exam entries have been made correctly. • Helping to develop learning resources/scheme of work for the department to enable all students to pass their BTEC/GCSE course. Evidence for this was clear in the BTEC day.
HARRIS ACADEMY AT PECKHAM: Completed the period of Induction (in-service training) at Harris Academy at Peckham. I was offered an employment as a science Teacher in the Academy and taught for a minimum of 5years. I taught the KS3, KS4 science and AS and A2 chemistry. In terms of pupils’ attainment, I did produce the best value added score in GCSE exams for the science department at the academy at Peckham. E.g. This was evident in the Departmental Memo circulated when the 2004 AQA GCSE science module exams was result released. I won the Harris Champagne.
Furthermore, the 2006 GCSE result showed an impressive achievement of the group I taught (My year 11 group produce the highest number of A-C passes in the AQA GCSE single science award.) As a Teaching and learning representative of the science department I cascade the Teaching and learning activities to the science staff during departmental meetings and have delivered whole school inset at the Academy at Peckham. Furthermore, I deputized for the head of department in his absence during departmental meetings.
Pastoral-As part of my role as a form tutor for a group of challenging year 11 students (had the group from year 8), I played a leading role in communicating and liaising with parents to deal with issues concerning the students and also to promote the image of the school. I Evaluated and monitored the progress of students and kept up to date students record as required.
Contributed to PSHE and Citizenship and enterprise according to the academy Policy and applied the Academy Behaviour management systems so that effective learning could take place.
As ICT continues to be a focal point in our everyday educational lives, I have embraced this phenomenon and have developed good ICT skills. Have already made some creative use of ICT in the classroom. Attended exhibitions/shows in order to assist the subject co-ordinator
to identify resources which can support teaching of science in the school (Academy) e.g. attended the BeTT show.
I have delivered whole school inset on using ICT to enhance Teaching and learning at the Academy at Peckham. Working as a team with other members of staff to promote teaching and Learning, I played a leading role in writing out scheme of work which meet National Curriculum, SEN and GCSE requirement for the science department at the academy at Peckham.
Used range of teaching and learning strategies in my lessons to meet the needs of students in my class and to improve achievement and attainment and evidence of this is shown in the feedback report from lesson observation made on my lessons. SEN experience: At Academy at Peckham I also taught group of SEN pupils (11-15yrears) who fall within the following 4 wider areas of need: • Communication and interaction; • Cognition and learning; • Behavioural, emotional and social development; • Sensory or physical difficulties. I liaised with the SENCO of the Academy in order to provide effective learning opportunities for all pupils based on three principles: • setting suitable learning challenges; • responding to pupils’ diverse learning needs; • overcoming potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils I taught.
