About Reyanna

Hello and welcome! My name is Reyanna, and I am an undergraduate student majoring in Biology at UC Santa Cruz. Navigating the rigorous academic landscape of a top-tier research institution has not only sharpened my scientific expertise but has also reinforced my deep belief that any academic milestone is achievable with the right strategy. My approach to education is grounded in the core belief that standardized tests like the SAT, ACT, and GED do not define your intelligence, they simply test your familiarity with a specific system.

Bringing three years of diverse teaching and mentorship experience to my practice, I have honed the precise adaptability required to guide students through pivotal educational transitions. Having recently relocated from Taiwan to the United States, I possess a firsthand understanding of what it means to master an unfamiliar educational system under pressure. This international background allows me to connect deeply with students facing academic anxiety, providing them with a uniquely patient, globally minded, and highly encouraging learning environment.

Let’s conquer this next milestone together!

1. Teaching Method & Techniques

Test prep isn't just about knowing the material; it’s about mastering the test itself. Because standard testing can feel incredibly intimidating, my method blends academic clarity with behavioral strategy. The "Micro-Lesson" Strategy: Long lectures don't work for test prep. I break down complex concepts (like advanced SAT/ACT algebra or GED science passages) into 10-to-15 minute digestible blocks, immediately followed by targeted practice questions to lock in the skill. Decoupling the Test Structure: I teach students how to read like a test maker. We focus heavily on pattern recognition, process of elimination, and time-saving shortcuts (e.g., plugging in numbers or identifying trap answers). Anxiety Regulation: Coming from a rigorous scientific background, I view test anxiety as a variable we can control. I teach data-backed pacing techniques and mental check-ins to keep students calm under a ticking clock.

2. A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)

Every single minute of a test prep session is structured to maximize retention and eliminate score-dropping habits.

(10 mins) The Warm-Up & Review - We analyze 3–5 missed questions from their previous homework. We focus entirely on why they missed them (Concept error? Time rush? Silly mistake?).

(15 mins) Targeted Skill Building - Introducing a brand-new concept or strategy. For example: Mastering Right-Triangle Trigonometry for the ACT or Tackling the GED Social Studies Data Charts.

(20 mins) Guided & Timed Practice - The student tackles a set of real, official practice questions. First, we do it untimed to build accuracy, then we apply a strict timer to simulate real exam pressure.

(10 mins) The Review - We grade the practice set together. I have the student explain their thought process back to me, ensuring they actually understand the logic.

(5 mins) Action Plan - Assigning specific, targeted homework sections for the week ahead and setting a clear goal for the next session.

3. What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:

Scientific, Data-Driven Customization: As a Biology major at UC Santa Cruz, my brain is wired for diagnostics. I don't just give generic practice tests; I track exactly which sub-categories (e.g., linear equations vs. quadratic functions, or reading comprehension vs. grammar syntax) are dragging a student's score down, creating a hyper-personalized roadmap.

Global Experience & Ultimate Patience: My experience moving from Taiwan to America gives me a deep, lived understanding of what it feels like to face a massive linguistic or academic hurdle. Because I also have a history of babysitting and volunteering to read to library kids, I bring an exceptional level of patience and warmth that turns a stressful process into an empowering one.

The Peer-Mentor Dynamic: I am currently navigating higher education myself. Because I am close in age to my students, I speak their language. I am a supportive peer who just mastered the system, making me far more relatable than a rigid, traditional lecture-style instructor.

4. Who the Lessons Are For?

My test prep services are precisely calibrated for three distinct groups of students:

SAT & ACT Prep (High School Sophomores, Juniors, & Seniors) - For students aiming for competitive college admissions. Whether they are struggling to break past a score plateau or are trying to raise their math and science sections to match their verbal skills, I tailor the pacing to their specific target-university goals.

GED Prep (Adult Learners & Non-Traditional Students): For individuals working toward their high school equivalency diploma. I specialize in breaking down all four subtests (Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science). I focus heavily on building foundational confidence for students who may have been out of the classroom for a while.

English Language Learners (ELL / ESL): Thanks to my international background, I am uniquely equipped to help students who speak English as a second language navigate the dense, fast-paced reading and grammar sections of these American standardized exams.
