About Axel

I’m Axel, and I'm a graduate from the BA Acting of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. Since graduating I have worked extensively on stage, performed my own solo play, and have started working on screen (The Agency Season 2, where I have worked alongside Michael Fassbender). My practice is inspired from the 3 year training I received from Sinéad Rushe (Lead Acting Tutor at RADA). I am also the founder of auditionhack (an acting and Drama school advice platform), and decided to launch a coaching service after realising that few drama school audition coaches offer preparation that is very specific to the current audition process in top drama schools. The way Drama Schools audition candidates evolves regularly, and I wanted to make sure that I can prepare applicants with the most up-to-date information, having been through that process myself a few years ago. I also provide general acting coaching and lessons, and I will practice with beginner and intermediate actors the very same exercises learned on my BA acting.

We can work together on either purely Drama School Entrance (see I.) or Acting in general (see II.)

I. DRAMA SCHOOL ENTRANCE

I have helped students get into RADA, LAMDA, Guildhall, RWCMD, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Bristol Old Vic, the National Youth Theatre, and IDENTITY School of Acting (Professional Level). My Drama School audition Teaching Method is divided in three core parts (skip and see further below if not interested in Drama School): 1. Finding Great Monologues or duologues: I will help you to find what resonates the most with your personality and cultural heritage, and that will inform greatly your monologue research. 2. Building a Rich Performance: We will work on having well-rounded monologues that display a character journey, great tension, a developed imaginary world and physical embodiment. At the end of our work you will not only speak the words but you will see, feel, hear, and live in the moment. 3. Being ready for redirection This is the most challenging part of most recalls. Therefore I will test your ability to think on your feet, to stretch your imagination and to be open to all types of new contexts for your monologues that the panel could throw at you.

II. ACTING

Even if you're not interested in getting into Drama School, if you want to improve your acting skills, with me you will work on: 1. Text Analysis: it's about really understanding in depth the clues and "juice" the text is offering and dividing it into units which will help set up variation of tone, emotion, and intention. 2. Vocal ownership: I will guide you towards the right intonation, projection, volume and pitch that suits the discoveries we made in the text analysis. 3. Physical embodiment: we will work to help you find the right posture, movements and physicality that suits the given circumstances. 4. Imagination + Psychology: I will help you connect to your imaginary circumstances via guided immersive exercises, to see how these affect your feelings and emotion. The exercises I will use to elevate your work are inspired by Konstantin Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, Michael Chekhov, Jacques Lecoq and Kristin Linklater.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started coaching a year and a half ago. After spending a lot of time discussing with acting coaches, casting directors, agents, drama school teachers and students, I realised that there was a need for an up to date platform helping people to get into drama school or acting, which led me to create auditionhack.com. As the website's audience grew into the thousands, I realised that there was a need for a coaching tailored to people's personalities, whether they want to get into drama school or begin their acting journey.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

So many of them! In the UK Daniel Kaluuya has recently been one of my biggest inspirations, he makes the work seem so easy. Nonso Anozie and Rufus Sewell are Central's Alumni who also blow me away as to how natural they appear on screen. Recently in the US, Edi Gathegi has also been a huge discovery for me. Australian Dacre Montgomery also gave the universe an acting (and self tape) masterclass that will stay with us for a while. And finally, in France, Omar Sy has been the international French star the world has been waiting for!
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

I think as an actor the most important quality is listening to the other actor. I also think it is extremely important for an actor to know themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, their values... And only then should they start getting to know the character. In doing so, they will know what roles are easier/harder for them and I will help them to bridge the gap between their own personality and circumstances vs the character's personality and circumstances.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

If you want to be a professional actor my first advice would be to try and have that other thing/job that can get you money and keep you going. A lot of actors can't sustain the acting lifestyle because they struggle to pay the rent and that will affect your mental health which in turn will affect your acting work and process. I would also say that overall it's key to try and be happy outside of acting, trying to have healthy relationships with friends, family, and partners. If you do that you'll be a fulfilled individual and I can guarantee that it will come across in your acting.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

It makes me feel fulfilled, curious, excited for the next discovery about the character, their psychology, their physicality, their circumstances!
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I am proud that I got into one of the best drama schools in the country, as well as signing with a UK Acting Agent and Voice Agent, as well as writing my first full length play.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I have! One of my students started acting only a year ago but has achieved an incredible progression, starting to work on feature films and meeting Hollywood actors.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Listening to who I have in front of me and tailoring my coaching based on their personality, desires, and goals.
