About Cameron

I began playing the viola in group classes at my local state funded middle school in Nashville Tennessee. After taking years of private lessons and performing as principal viola in my youth and regional state orchestras, I began my BA in viola performance at the Indiana University Jacobs school of Music where I studied with Stephen Wyrczynski and Ed Gazouleas before graduating in 2013. In 2014 I moved to Los Angeles California where I began working at Renaissance Arts Academy, a k-12 school supported by the National Endowment for the Arts that provides high-level performing arts training for students at every level of development, bringing together a cross-section of L.A.’s diverse ethnic, economic and cultural populations in a focused community designed to provide intellectual challenge, disciplined development of creative skills, and a cohesive school culture accessible to all students. There I was the music department co-chair, taught viola in group classes, and led chamber orchestra rehearsals to music conservatoire entrance audition standards. Many of my viola and violin students were the first members of their families to graduate from high school and also were awarded scholarships to music conservatoires in the United States. While living in Los Angeles, I had an active freelance career, performing in recording studios on major video game and commercial recording projects and had appearances on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ and also served as co principal viola of the American Youth Symphony. In 2019 I moved to London for an MA course at the Royal Academy of Music on scholarship where I studied with Jon Thorne and graduated with distinction, the San Martino, and Frank Britton Awards. While at Academy I led multiple viola sections and was principal viola of the Academy Manson contemporary music group. I am also a founding member of the Salwa Quartet who were placed on the Frost ASSET quartet training course where we were closely mentored by Martin Outram. I perform regularly with Fidelio Orchestra and Audentia Ensemble as their principal violist and have been accepted onto the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group’s NEXT course for 2021-2022. I have an eclectic musical taste and am passionate about commissioning and performing new music, have studied baroque viola with Jane Rogers from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and also enjoy performing a range of musical styles from English viol consort fantasias to modern hip hop orchestras. Outside of performing I participated in numerous Open Academy projects at the Academy, collaborating and working alongside adult learners in the City Lit percussion ensemble and with residents in care homes living with dementia. I am a keen hiker and amateur chef who loves preparing and hosting dinners for close friends and family.

I strive to keep the joy in music making while helping my students use their strengths to further develop confidence and technique. Helping students develop strong foundations of posture, violin/bow hold, and a good sense of pitch and pulse are key to cultivating the security to play a wide variety of music to a high standard with enjoyment. I work with students to help them find a practice routine that fits within their lifestyle and progress towards their own expectations. As a classically trained violist/violinist I am happy to work on traditional repertoire and help improve existing abilities and musicality or to establish a strong technical foundation in beginners for lifelong music making enjoyment. I am also more than open to working on music outside of the classical realm and tailor lessons to help students pursue individual interests. I recently graduated from the Royal Academy of Music on the MA viola performance course with distinction and have over 7 years of teaching experience including beginners with no musical background as well as successfully preparing many students for top music conservatoire auditions. I am also happy to teach outside of classical violin and viola depending on the interest of the student. I hold a multiple subject teaching credential from the California Board of Education, the American equivalent of a qualified teacher status in the UK and can provide DBS certificate on request. I am experienced working with ages 8 through adults in one to one and group lessons. I offer 30, 45, and 60 minute lessons.
