My teaching method focuses on working with the student to grasp the basic concept of the lesson or chapter in the textbook, through a one-on-one discussion of the chapter with him or her. This is where I can find out if the student has a complete understanding of the chapter and if not I can "fill in the gaps" as needed . Once I'm confident that they have a good grasp of the subject matter in the chapter, then we would go on to the problems at the end of the chapter and work some of them together, with the student taking the lead. Basically the lesson plan would be, simplistically:
I. Discussion of the fundamental concepts in the chapter or lesson, ensuring that the student has a good grasp of them.
II. Solving some problems together which illustrate the use of the fundamental concepts in the chapter.
What sets me apart from a lot of the other math and science tutors is my experience in the engineering field. I was an automotive engineer at General Motors for 38 years, and enjoyed a wonderful career with a lot of great experiences, and I can relate some of my experiences as kind of a pep talk to my students who might be tempted to drop their calculus class and take something a little easier.
My lessons would be basically for high-school algebra, pre-calculus and calculus, as well as undergrad calculus, differential equations, thermodynamics, structures (stress/strain), controls, and introductory engineering courses.
