My teaching approach is problem-solving. I eschew one size fits all mathematics because students learn differently. By the book is often the least fruitful approach. In my own learning, for example, I had trouble with related rates problems because I had difficulty filling in the boxes (still the method taught). I found it easier to just generate the equations from the context, not from stratified boxes.
