About Alex
I taught in the public schools for 33 years. I am Elementary (K-8) licensed with TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Reading Teacher endorsements. I have taught in three states, New York, New Jersey, and New Mexico, and have worked with children from the inner city to rural and semi rural areas to Native American reservations. I have taught first grade, second grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, and worked as a Middle School Reading Teacher, a K-2 Mentor to primary grade teachers, a Reading Specialist, a Supplemental Kindergarten Teacher, and as a Title I Remedial Reading and Math teacher. I have also conducted teacher workshops on phonics-based reading and spelling instruction. In October of 2019, I won the Teacher of the Month award at my school and was honored for my teaching at a school board meeting.

I believe that reading and spelling instruction are most effective when built upon a solid foundation of phonics. Once these phonetic skills are in place, reading ability is best developed through instruction in reading comprehension skills and through a program of extensive individualized reading. Indeed, reading comprehension skills and even the correct application of spelling rules and generalizations can be excellent ways of developing inductive logical thinking skills. I believe children should be encouraged to read good literature and be provided ample time to read both fiction and nonfiction books of their choice. As a former first grade teacher, I am familiar with some of the most fun and engaging books for beginning readers.
