Toot Toot Tutor Good Buy!... My name is John Marentette, and I recently retired from a high-school teaching career that began in 1996. Throughout my extensive tenure as an English instructor, I specialized in teaching advanced text analysis, writing mechanics, and composition design while empowering diverse student cohorts (including adult learners and ESL students) to be able to communicate more clearly and effectively. As both an educator and lifelong learner, I view clarity as the paramount quality that empowers writers to find their voice and connect with their audience. Toward this objective, I utilize a non-threatening, “minimalist-marking” approach to consistently promote strategic revision and audience awareness. Rather than compromise learner autonomy throughout this process, I emphasize the importance of navigating linguistic conventions responsibly and more independently. Students view these formative consultations as empowering rather than punitive—all while developing authentic critical thinking skills that serve as a powerful alternative to our society's increased overdependency on artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs). University student tutors mean well but lack professional institutional experience. I integrate 30 years of Ontario curriculum teaching, a Master of Education degree from OISE/UT, and an 18-year legacy of managing an in-school peer-tutoring network that extended instructional support beyond the classroom. My tutoring sessions are structured, text-centric, collaborative, and focused on promoting learner autonomy. Rather than using paid live sessions to read student texts for the first time, I maximize live tutoring time by providing asynchronous guided instruction (free of charge), where, prior to our session, the student is encouraged to submit a rubric and current writing draft. I review the text and provide expert, annotated diagnostic comments in advance (a feature designed to scaffold the transition to independent post-secondary writing but that is not replicated by university writing instructors). This strategy empowers learners to process feedback and revise independently prior to our live session. Upon launching the actual session, we immediately target remaining structural or syntactical gaps, introducing research-informed frameworks to enhance student cognition of writing mechanics, macro/micro structures, and audience awareness. The student applies this framework in real time via a shared digital document while I provide immediate oral guidance. We close by identifying manageable independent action steps. (NOTE: The platform's automated "free first lesson" is strictly a complimentary 15-to-20-minute phone or library consultation. Regular sessions are billed at my standard rate of $90/hr.)
