About Gary
Guitar teaching is part of a six year tutoring career during which I have taught 260 students, many arriving nervous about learning an instrument as an adult beginner. My own musical background combines early training with years of relaxed, informal playing in community settings, shaping a teaching philosophy centered on enjoyment and steady progress over rigid technical perfection. I am a calm, patient tutor, deliberately avoiding harsh correction in early lessons and focusing instead on building comfort with the instrument first. Many students specifically sought out a gentler, more relaxed tutor after feeling discouraged by more intense lessons elsewhere previously.

My guitar lessons begin from a place of reassurance, since many new students arrive convinced their fingers are simply not suited to the instrument before we have even started. Basic chord shapes and strumming patterns are introduced gently through simple, low pressure exercises, with a recognisable song included within the very first few sessions. I choose repertoire collaboratively, prioritising music each student genuinely enjoys over a fixed technical curriculum, since real enjoyment produces far more consistent home practice. Technique is developed through short, focused practice routines rather than long repetitive drills, since brief consistent effort produces stronger long term results. Sessions remain relaxed throughout every lesson.
