About David
A jazz guitarist and pianist, I’ve played across a variety of genres– rock, pop, jazz, big band, and country – and have been teaching itinerant and private guitar in the Waikato and West Auckland for over 15 years. As an artist and educator, I draw extensively from my classical and jazz studies in guitar and piano.

I teach students of all ages and skill levels. With a focus on deepening musicality and enjoyment, my lessons are developed around your interests and goals.
I can help you get started with the basics, grow well-rounded practical and theoretical skills applicable to a range of musical contexts, and provide instruction for specific genres such as jazz, rock, blues, fusion, and classical guitar.
My lessons can cover:
- Getting started: learning basic chords, strumming, fingerpicking, and learning songs.
- Essential music theory and practical skills applicable to a wide variety of genres.
- Guitar improvisation (jazz, blues, rock); combining small musical structures to a variety of chords.
- Jazz, blues, fusion, and rock styles (beginner to advanced)
- Classical guitar (beginner)
- Ear training, sight reading, and Composition
Improvisational approach:
Many guitarists want to get better at soloing and improvisation. However, the learning curve can be daunting and frustrating (particularly for jazz); there seem to be hundreds of chords, scales, and theoretical concepts to learn.
Yet even the most exotic sounding jazz improvisations are really just a smallish collection of musical building blocks placed together in interesting ways. With a few simple structures and ideas, we can start generating interesting and complex melodies and apply them to a variety of musical contexts.
