About Clare

Hello, my name is Clare, and I’m a dedicated tutor passionate about helping students thrive academically and personally. I am 22 years old and hold a triple major, which I completed while balancing extracurriculars, maintaining my mental health, and navigating ADHD and other learning challenges. This journey taught me grit, effective study strategies, and the importance of a supportive community and learning environment. Tutoring brings me joy because it allows me to share these skills and empower others. I believe that with the right guidance, compassion, and effort, every student can succeed. My approach combines evidence-based learning techniques with an emphasis on using your strengths to overcome difficulties. In fact, I hope to help students transform their so-called "weaknesses" into their greatest strengths. If you’ve ever felt unsure of your abilities, I want you to know that success is absolutely within your reach. With patience, encouragement, and the right strategies, we can get you there together.

My tutoring approach and philosophy is grounded in the idea that learning requires a tailored and unique approach for each student. My interdisciplinary academic background - informed by a triple major in Microbiology, Psychology, and Politics from the University of California, Santa Cruz with honours in each major and various research experiences across them - helps me create a personalised and compassionate relationship with each student. I focus on three main ideas: providing an environment for students that plays to their strengths to accommodate their knowledge gaps. For example, if you are a “math person” struggling with essay writing, I can help look at writing more logically. On the other hand, if you find science daunting, I’ll help frame scientific principles through a narrative lens. This helps make learning more intuitive and engaging. I have experience in wet-lab natural sciences research, and can help with providing resources for getting experience and showing the way science works in the real world, which provides students with real, grounded ways to look at their education. I also have extensive experience in STEM learning research, having even presented at an education conference on my research. I have a lot of knowledge on study techniques, including the way students learn cognitively, and can provide evidence-based, truly beneficial study techniques that help students both learn complexly and remember their learning long-term. My experience as a peer adviser has taught me how to look at each student individually while providing compassionate support during the learning process, making sure students feel comfortable making mistakes and ensuring accountability for learning goals. The typical length of a lesson will depend on student needs, but typically 30, 60, and 90 minute classes are best. 30 minute meetings are great for quick homework help and specific question review. 60 minute sessions are most popular, and perfect for introducing new concepts, working through problems, and developing strengths and identifying weaknesses. 90 minute sessions are best for intensive exam review, large projects, and diving very deep into complex topics. More or less time could be spent if it was beneficial for the student and schedules aligned. Tutoring can be provided for primary school, secondary school, and university-level students at ages 10 years old and above. Masters and doctoral students could be supported depending on the learning needs (i.e., scientific writing for STEM graduate students) or specific masters subjects covered in an American university that are not covered at an undergraduate level in the UK. Contact me for more questions about this to see if it would be a good fit. Subjects I typically offer support in are: Sciences: Biology, Microbiology, General and Organic Chemistry, Introductory Physics, and Introductory to Intermediate Mathematics. Social Sciences: Psychology, Political Science, and History. Academic skills: Essay writing, research paper composition, time management, educational planning, and CV writing. My ultimate goal is to empower students to not just succeed in current courses, but become a confident and independent learner with great skills for life.

Remote learning is the easiest and more flexible approach for myself, but if close by I am comfortable travelling to a student's home or having a session at my own, or a café. Depending on the travel distance, however, travel costs may increase or decrease.
