About Nicholas
Coming from a small and impoverished southern town, I am well aware of the blind spots of public education. I understand how dry and uninspiring educational materials can be, and I work to make things more interesting for my students. My approach is respectful and conversational: I believe all of my students are experts of their own interests, and think that exploring those interests through writing is a way to make learning more effective and, importantly, enjoyable.

My method focuses on the interests of my student. I find that, if my students write and discuss topics in which they are interested, the conventions of writing are much easier for them to absorb. I shape my lessons around the short-comings of the educational system, seeking to empower my students in their pursuits where, often, their educational careers have hindered them.
One of my lesson plans which demonstrates my approach is the literacy narrative. I encourage my students to write about an interest of theirs (a hobby, sport, etc.), describing what drew them to the activity and how they gained aptitude with it. Scene-driven writing (physically descriptive details, dialogue, and narrative) are the key elements I emphasize here. Once students grasp how to convey stories in such ways, the door is opened for them to begin learning further conventions of academic writing.
I have significant experience teaching college-level writing courses with students from various backgrounds. I am equipped and eager to tutor in college and college-prep materials for all students.
