About Alan

After finishing my B.A. in English-Literature a year-and-a-half early Cum Laude at the University of Nevada, Reno, I am enthusiastic to share my learned skills and talents to help streamline the experience of reading and writing. I specialize in simplifying the academic jargon and complexities of English subjects and the essay writing process so a student feels more and more confident in their ability and can set themselves up for better success later on.

I have worked with all age groups. I designed and led reading-based activities for children ages 6-13 as a Truckee Meadows Boys & Girls Club counselor. During High School, I assisted classmates to develop and refine paper topics. And since 2016, I have worked with numerous college undergrads of all majors, helping them develop their academic theses statements and editing drafts. In just one hour online via messenger, I helped a Chemistry major student improve from a C on his first Core Humanities essay to an A grade of 96%!

I have workshopped undergrad, graduate, and youth creative and academic writing and focus on how to highlight individual strengths of each writer rather than focusing solely on what is incorrect. I tailor my schedule to the student's needs and limitations and give them all of my focus.

About the lesson

The key to both editing and teaching English reading and writing is to recognize and guide the student to the essay they desire to write, not the essay the editor believes they should write.

My method involves giving the student all the tools they need to work, read, and write individually later on. Among those tools include skeletal formats and structures to build off of and develop ideas with ease, how to efficiently develop ideas while reading and recognize interpersonal connections in texts without marring yourself in the complexity of some pieces. I edit and provide constructive feedback during the drafting process, asking questions and leaving changes optional rather than simply saying what to change.

I aim to give the student everything they need right away to succeed and prefer they can learn to set themselves up for success independently rather than feeling reliant on repetitious tutoring sessions with each new assignment. It is a privilege to be paid and trusted to help a student to succeed, a privilege I refuse to take advantage of.
