I have been tutoring privately and in elementary schools and Adult Literacy programs for over 25 years. My students were in 3rd place as the most improved elementary school in Massachusetts. I also received the national award for helping Dyslexic students.

I adjust my teaching to each student. I usually begin by having the student read text out loud, specially formatted a phrase at a time. This is read out loud before hearing it spoken. This is ideal for correcting bad reading habits. Then we progress to reading a punctuation interval at a time; this is ideal for improving comprehension and improving fluency. Then we move to reading a sentence at a time; this is ideal for teaching four additional forms of comprehension improvement. At this point the student starts to read silently with the spoken text. Then we move to overcoming subvocalization and lip reading and improving reading speed and vocablulary. At this point the student starts to read silently ahead of computer voice. We only read great literature. My approach is called Proportional Reading
