About Terry

Hello, and thank you for taking a look at my profile. My name is Terry and I would be delighted to help you achieve your goals in science. I am a qualified Science teacher, with several years experience teaching in main stream schools in the UK, as well as exam marking. I also tutored throughout my studies at university. I first got interested in science when I wanted a career change. I knew I wanted to study at university, but couldn't decide what. I asked myself "what could keep me interested for 3 years of hard study?". I very quickly realised biology was the only option. Little did I know that "3 years" would turn into a lifetime of learning, only enhanced when I discovered the joy of teaching through tutoring in my second year. This led to me studying to become a qualified teacher, learning more about the world of chemistry and physics as I went. I turned my two passions into a career, and have never looked back. Science is incredible and all around us, helping students to understand the world they live in is the greatest experience - and why this is the best job in the world.

About the lesson

My sessions will work at your pace, and are tailored to give the maximum impact for our time together. My experience of exam marking has allowed me to identify common themes, and where students commonly go wrong - so you can be assured you won't make these mistakes on exam day. I offer a relaxed environment, which makes it easier for me to identify specific examples and explanations that will stick with you personally, and most importantly be easy to recall when you need them. A typical lesson starts with some simple recall to engage our brains. Then an overview of the content we are going to cover (agreed in advance between us). I will put the content into a real world context - you will be surprised how much you already knew, I will give you the tools to explain things scientifically (which is where the marks are in exams!) Finally we will practise applying your new knowledge via exercises and exam questions. I will provide as much help as required, until you find you don't need my help any more with that content. We will periodically review your progress, and at all times it will be clear to you what you have learnt (and why) and what you will be learning next. My teaching method is informed by the latest best practice research which I review periodically. Every step of the process I've described above has a sound evidence base and proven track record in achieving lasting learning in students.
