About Davies

Over four years of teaching piano, I’ve been fortunate to guide over 150 students from high schools and colleges, each with their own aspirations and musical backgrounds. My lessons are designed to be clear, encouraging, and tailored to each individual’s needs, focusing on technique, reading skills, and expressive playing. I believe that the best learning happens when students feel connected to their music, so I work hard to link pieces to their personal tastes and experiences. One of my proudest moments was supporting a nervous college student through their first solo recital. We worked intensively on both the music and performance mindset, and their final recital was met with a standing ovation. That experience was not only a milestone for the student but also a testament to the transformative power of dedicated teaching and learning. I believe music is accessible and enriching for everyone, and I’m passionate about helping students find their own unique musical voices and confidence on the piano.

In my piano teaching, I focus on creating a structured yet flexible environment where students can build strong foundations while also exploring their musical personalities. I start with the basics—hand position, finger strength, note reading, rhythm—and gradually introduce more advanced concepts like dynamics, phrasing, and interpretation. But I don’t teach these as isolated tasks; I embed them in the context of the music we’re learning. I believe this integrated approach helps students retain information and apply it meaningfully. I use a wide range of repertoire to reflect both the student’s skill level and interests. We might study a Bach minuet one week and a movie theme the next, and I show students how both pieces offer valuable lessons in timing, articulation, and expression. I encourage my students to listen critically—to their own playing, to professional recordings, and even to different genres of music—so they can start forming musical opinions and preferences. This active listening builds deeper understanding and helps them grow into independent musicians. I also encourage creative thinking. Improvisation, arranging, and composing are regular parts of our lessons, even if only for a few minutes each week. These creative exercises keep students engaged and teach them that music is not only something to be read but also something to be made. I make space in each lesson for discussion, reflection, and questions. I want students to feel that their voice matters in their musical journey. If something isn’t working, I’m quick to adapt. My teaching isn’t about pushing a student towards a fixed idea of success—it’s about helping them define and achieve their own goals. I also maintain clear communication with families and recommend specific practice strategies to support learning at home. My aim is to build not only skilful pianists but thoughtful, expressive individuals who carry a love for music into every part of their lives.
