About Joy

I’m a passionate educator who genuinely loves teaching, and I believe that enthusiasm has a positive impact on my students’ engagement with learning. I’m easygoing, patient and creative, and I always strive to make my lessons enjoyable and inspiring. My goal is to create a classroom environment where students love to learn, and I make sure every minute is used meaningfully. I respect every student and am skilled at encouraging their efforts and progress with positive reinforcement. I have high expectations for my students and aim to guide them in pushing beyond their zone of proximal development to reach their full potential. I’m someone who thinks outside the box—for me, learning Mandarin is not just about mastering a language, but about appreciating Eastern culture. Similarly, learning maths isn’t just about calculations, but about discovering patterns in the world through mathematical thinking. Through this unique perspective on both subjects, I hope to spark students’ curiosity and love for learning—because after all, isn’t interest the best teacher?

About the lesson

I have extensive teaching experience, with a total of seven years across China, the UK, and the US. With nearly four years of experience teaching secondary school mathematics, I support students aged 11–16 in preparing for their GCSEs and aged 16-18 for A-Level (pure maths). I am skilled at using creative explanations and incorporating Eastern wisdom to make learning maths more accessible and enjoyable. My approach not only helps improve students’ exam performance but also fosters a genuine interest in the subject. In the UK, I have worked full-time for two years at a grammar school and spent another two years teaching Mandarin in adult education in London. I have helped secondary school students achieve excellent results in their GCSE and A-Level exams, and I have guided hundreds of students through the HSK exams. In adult Mandarin education, my engaging teaching style and strong academic background have greatly increased learners’ interest in the language. I have supported professionals from various industries in improving their speaking and reading skills while also deepening their understanding of Chinese culture. My students range from complete beginners to HSK5, and I am confident in tailoring lessons to suit learners of different levels and goals through personalised learning plans. I am available for both online and in-person lessons, and I am based in London.
