About Shane

Dia duit!

I'm a qualified Irish teacher with a BA International in Gaeilge and French and a Professional Master's in Education from the University of Galway. I am currently teaching Irish at secondary school level and am also completing an MA in Translation Studies. With over seven years of tutoring experience, I have supported a wide range of learners, from Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate students to adult learners pursuing personal, academic, and professional goals through Irish.

I specialise in supporting students preparing for Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate examinations, as well as adult learners preparing for TEG B1 and B2 examinations and applicants to the Hibernia PME programme. Having recently completed my own teacher education journey and successfully completed the Droichead induction process, I understand both the academic and practical demands of teacher education programmes and language assessments.

Over the years, I have taught Irish in secondary schools, worked as a teacher in the Gaeltacht, delivered private tuition both online and in person, and created educational content and revision resources for Leaving Certificate students. My experience working with learners of different ages and abilities allows me to adapt lessons to suit each individual's needs, learning style, and goals.

I can help with:

• Junior Cycle Irish
• Leaving Certificate Irish (Higher and Ordinary Level)
• Oral Irish preparation, including the Sraith Pictiúr and conversation topics
• Irish grammar and written expression
• TEG B1 and B2 examination preparation
• Hibernia PME interview preparation
• Support with Hibernia coursework and reflective assignments
• Conversational Irish and fluency development
• Adult learners returning to Irish after school

What you can expect:

• Personalised lesson plans tailored to your goals
• Comprehensive notes, resources, and revision materials
• Practical exam and interview preparation
• Constructive feedback and ongoing support
• Flexible online lessons
• A patient, supportive, and encouraging teaching style

My aim is to help learners build confidence in Irish and achieve their full potential. Whether you're preparing for the Leaving Certificate, working towards a TEG qualification, applying to Hibernia, or simply looking to improve your Irish for personal or professional reasons, I would be delighted to help.

Feel free to get in touch with any questions. I aim to respond within 24 hours.

Go n-éirí leat!

Lessons are delivered online via Zoom and focus on developing all key language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. I provide structured guidance, personalised resources, and practical strategies to help learners build confidence and achieve their goals.

For Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate students, lessons include:
• Oral Irish preparation, including the Sraith Pictiúr and conversation topics.

• Essay and comprehension techniques.
• Poetry, prose, and literature support.
• Exam strategies and past-paper practice.

For TEG and adult learners, lessons include:
• Speaking and listening practice.
• Grammar revision and language development.
• TEG B1 and B2 examination preparation.
• Interview preparation.
• Conversational Irish and fluency building.
• Support for learners returning to Irish after many years.

I also offer support for Hibernia PME applicants, including interview preparation, Irish-language practice and guidance on coursework.

My teaching approach is patient, supportive and practical. I believe learners make the most progress when they feel comfortable asking questions and actively using the language. My goal is not only to help you achieve your immediate objectives but also to develop your confidence and enjoyment of Irish.

Whether you're aiming for higher exam grades, preparing for a professional qualification, or simply looking to reconnect with the language, I would be delighted to help.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

My mother speaks Irish so I have spoken the language at home growing up. I have studied Irish in school and in university. I've had many fantastic teachers and lecturers who have inspired me to speak Irish and to improve my written Irish.

I started learning French with a native French speaker when I was eight years old and I went onto study French in university. I spent a period studying in a French university in Brest which allowed me to speak French on a daily basis.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

    Really can't think of any!
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

"Is fearr Gaeilge bhriste ná Béarla cliste" - "Broken Irish is better than clever English" It is a phrase that every Irish learner should know.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Irish is one of the oldest languages in the world. It is estimated to be 7000 years old. Despite 600 years of English and the Great Famine, the language is still alive and being spoken in Ireland today. Like all minority languages, Irish is under pressure as a community language in traditional spoken areas. However, it is an important part of Irish culture and should be promoted and passed onto the next generations.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty for people living far away from the Gaeltacht is opportunities to speak the language. Lessons on Superprof help! Duolingo is useful for basic phrases. There is also useful beginners videos on youtube. Gaelchultúr have useful books for beginners and Irish grammar which can be found online.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

At school, a teacher said that the best way to learn Gaeilge is by speaking the language. "Beatha teanga í a labhairt" - "Life of a language is in the speaking" You can learn all the grammar in the world but it is useless to you if you can't speak the language. She said grammar can always be learned later.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

A school trip to Donegal helped me to become aware of the differences that exist between the three dialects of Irish. I learned phrases in the Ulster dialect which was interesting as it is very different from Connacht Irish. I became aware that it is not hard to understand a new Irish dialect you are unfamiliar with, something which I wasn't expecting.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have completed school placements in Gaeltacht schools and English medium schools. I have experience teaching fluent Irish speakers how to improve their Gaeilge as well as helping non native speakers to learn the language. This experience allows me to teach learners of all abilities.
