About Ryan

Hi! My name is Ryan and I am an English and science teacher at Wittayanukulnaree high school in Phetchabun, Thailand. I hold a bachelors degree in biological sciences from the University of Edinburgh and I am also a fully qualified 'Teaching English as a Foreign Language' (TEFL) teacher.

I currently teach high school students, however prior to my current role I taught primary school reading groups as well as organised and volunteered at English language summer camps in Romania and the UK.

My passion for teaching is reflected in my lessons as I believe that the traditional vocabulary drilling approach is inefficient and so I aim to keep lessons relevant and useful for each individual student.

About the lesson

As a professional English as a second language (ESL) teacher, I believe that the development of language skills comes through exposure to a wide range of conversational topics and subject areas. Through experience of teaching science to speakers of other languages, I have developed a teaching method which allows students to communicate complex ideas effectively using the vocabulary and grammar skills already in their arsenal. This approach emphasises a natural fluency and progression pattern that breaks away from traditional vocabulary drilling which other English teaching programmes rely too heavily upon.

I aim to keep lessons relevant and engaging by including interesting and exciting content generally glossed over in textbooks. I do this as I believe the best way for a student to learn is to be creative with their language skills and to promote a desire to confidently engage with the target language through positive reinforcement; Generally, students who believe that they are good at English, have the confidence to communicate more effectively.

As an online tutor my aim is to supplement learning from other avenues, whether it be school, university or just a general desire to improve language proficiency. I believe the best way to do this is to know in advance what the student would like to cover and prepare relevant and engaging lessons according to this. This approach has previously worked well on a weekly basis or simply one off sessions to assess or review English language skills.

I can tutor for the full scale of proficiency levels and have experience teaching students with no prior experience as well as those who wish to hone their fluency through conversation. I am more than happy to meet and discuss potential tutoring before making any final decisions
