About Alex E
I am a first-generation undergraduate student at the University of Washington-Seattle pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a minor in Education, Learning & Society as an aspiring school social worker. After graduating from the University of Washington, I plan to obtain a MSW from UW and work in schools.
In my hometown, low-income and immigrant families do not possess adequate resources due to the unequal system that erases their struggles. With my BA in Psychology, I want to provide affordable mental health resources to children and families that come from queer, immigrant, low-income, and underrepresented communities. I also hope to provide culturally competent interventions to low-income immigrant schools that address collective struggle and generational trauma.
I am currently volunteering with Reading Partners Seattle where I provide one-on-one tutoring in literacy areas to students who are in underrepresented communities and behind in grade-level reading. Volunteering with Reading Partners allows me to get training in Social Emotional Learning (SEL), and use that curriculum to teach children effective methods to express their emotions and ask adults how to meet their needs. Therefore, my experiences inspired me to start my career by tutoring children with Reading Partners because I wanted to understand the most equitable ways to support them emotionally and academically.

I have experience being an English tutor, I worked as a Writing Center Assistant at my community college. I assisted students with writing assignments by working on sentence structure, transitional phrases, and revising techniques that helped students enhance their essay composition skills. I helped students with computer programs by answering troubleshooting questions on programs such as MS Word, Google Docs, and Canvas, which helped solve technological barriers students might face. I also created a welcoming environment for students by maintaining friendly, open, and respectful behavior for all individuals, which increased students’ growth and perseverance.
I also currently provide one-on-one tutoring in literacy areas to students who are behind in grade-level reading by using creative strategies to teach the lessons, which helps children have a say in the curriculum. I use an evidence-based curriculum by following predetermined lessons and watching instructional videos, ensuring that underrepresented children get equitable tutoring. I also maintain a welcoming and safe environment for children to grow by exerting patience and empathy for the diverse struggles children go through, which allows them to feel validated in their journey.
When it comes to Spanish tutoring, I do not have a lot of experience, however, I was born in a Spanish-speaking country, and Spanish was the first language I was taught and became fluent in. I am confident in my Spanish fluency skills and based on my previous experience as a tutor, I know I can connect my Spanish and tutoring skills to ensure that people receive an adequate tutoring lesson.
