About Sanaa

I love finding out about other people from different communities and helping people learn English from beginners level right up to A- level. I have taught TEFL and English for a few years to children who speak a range of other languages from around the world. I believe in listening to my students and helping them in any areas which they feel they need the most help. I like to use real life examples and teach people things that will be relevant in their work and home life. I think conversational English is very important and I allow my students to talk and ask questions about life in the UK. I also provide real life examples where reading and writing are concerned. Using real life, relevant examples such as application forms, leaflets and books to help learners to develop real and accurate usage of written English and understand different types of text that they will see often. Most importantly I show my student's their progress and celebrate their successes whilst continuously developing any areas which they may struggle with.

This academic year, I was employed by Bright Young Things as a tutor. My role was to ensure each child is making steady progress and making sure they are working and achieving to the best of their ability. My goal in teaching is to provide a nurturing environment that allows children to learn and grow intellectually. I worked with students that came from a variety of backgrounds and different socio-economic levels. I learnt how cultural aspects demand a slightly different approach to teaching and engaging children and parents. I had to manage difficult, open and honest conversations with students when they found their 11+ exams very difficult or got a low grade in their GCSE or A-Level mock exam and ensure they always felt supported throughout this process. I had to apply the same approach when providing feedback to parents each week. All my students had a 100% progress rate in both Maths and English. I get a lot of personal satisfaction when even one child has benefitted from my inputs, and I endeavour to ensure that all children of all abilities are treated equally and equitably.

After graduation, I have been working as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA). I work on a one-to-one basis with a 7 year old boy with Global Developmental Delay, speech and language delay and communication needs. I also teach classes in a primary school. I am currently doing my PGCE and will gain my certificate this year.
I use an interactive, 3 dimensional teaching style which is fun and focused on the learning objective for the day. I engage my student using the inquiry-based approach, which facilitates more creative thinking responses. This requires me to be very mentally agile in order not to lose the students attention. Using this approach I manage to keep the student on an equal playing field with the other students. I worked throughout with childcare and SEN professionals in order to ensure that my teaching met the individual needs of each child. I also had the opportunity to assist the SALT (Speech and Language Therapist) team in their assessments. This required excellent administration and observation skills, as well as the ability to multitask, as I was simultaneously observing their sessions and documenting them. This placement honed existing skills, such as meticulous time keeping and strong communication skills, but also afforded me new ones, unique to the classroom setting. These include liaising with parents and carers in a professional capacity, motivating students, and being aware of the ethical side of working with children.
The experience of working with less able children also inspired me to use innovative and creative ways of engaging children. I gained an acute understanding during this time of how to incorporate elements such as sign language, colour, song, and play, in order to promote cognitive development. My chief aim when I am with a child is to facilitate comfort, confidence and competence, and this goal drives every task I undertake. I witnessed first-hand from the SALT team the vital importance of positive reinforcement, and of praising, nurturing behaviour, and strive to adopt this approach myself as I progress in the field.
Over the last summer, I was fortunate to have an opportunity to work overseas in a rural primary school in Kenya. This was a voluntary assignment to teach children aged 3 -6, elementary English and Maths. I learnt how cultural aspects demanded a slightly different approach to teaching and engaging children and parents. I left these placements in no doubt that teaching is my vocation.
