About Abbey

I am a young professional with a background in writing and editing across multiple genres. I graduated from Elon University in 2017 with a major in English, specializing in professional writing and rhetoric.

At college, in addition to my part time gig as a copy-editor at the school newspaper, I worked as a writing consultant at our library's Writing Center, becoming a Lead consultant after a year. My job allowed me to work with students in developing any writing they were working on. I was able to develop strong relationships with several clients who would return with new assignments. Working at the Writing Center was incredibly rewarding, and inspired me to take on a more long-term developmental teaching style with my work.

After college, I took on a contract position copy-editing for an intellectual property rights consulting company, a position I still hold today. I also worked on a sustainability-focused blog, creating new posts monthly. I have held full-time administrative positions in academia and local government, which have made me a better communicator and introduced me to new writing styles and genres. In my current role, I have been able to take on multiple writing projects, such as an event planning guide, a cost recovery ordinance, and a department-wide newsletter.

Communication is my passion, and I believe that everyone can become an effective and confident writer by overcoming their fears and getting excited about the possibilities!

About the lesson

I take a holistic view of developing writing skills, focusing on voice, understanding structure, and catering to a specific audience. While comfort with grammar and vocabulary are important skillsets that I will build on, my primary goal is to get clients comfortable with their writing so that they feel confident in taking on any assignment.

I have worked primarily with teenagers and college students, but can tailor a lesson to any level, including both younger students and adults alike.

You can bring me any piece of writing you're working on (along with a rubric or prompt, if applicable). We will go over whatever stage of the piece you have ready -an outline or a full draft are both fine- and plot a best course forward. By the end of the session, you will have a strong vision of what your next steps are and how to achieve them.

I pride myself in bringing a fun and enthusiastic atmosphere to any session. If you can find ways to enjoy the writing process, the skills will follow!
