About Laura

I’m a painter and mixed media artist with a BFA in fine art and illustration from ArtCenter College of Design and over 14 years of experience as a professional studio painter. I have loved drawing and art my whole life, and I love to share that passion with others.

I specialize in realistic drawing and painting with a special interest in figure drawing, anatomy, and portraiture.

I am also experienced in a range of mediums and genres, including:
- acrylic and oil painting
- graphite
- charcoal
- digital drawing
- soft sculpture and textile art
- still life
- perspective

I’m here to help students develop strong skills and confidence in their artistic ability, no matter their starting point, with a focus on creating convincing, realistic work. Through one-on-one guidance I support a range of goals, from pursuing art professionally to simply enjoying the process. My teaching style is encouraging, patient, and tailored to you. Whatever your area of interest, I’ll meet you where you are and give you a clear, structured path to improve.

About the lesson

Lessons are geared to suit your personal goals. You may be a beginner (of any age) with no idea where to start, a student looking to build your art school application portfolio, a working artist seeking assistance with a current project, or a hobbyist looking for new tips and techniques. I tailor my approach to meet each student’s unique needs.

Here’s what we can work on together:

Foundations of Drawing (Beginner to Intermediate) Develop your observational skills and learn how to see and draw accurately using line, proportion, and basic forms. We’ll cover light and shadow, value, composition, and simple still life to build a strong foundation.

Realism & Rendering (Intermediate to Advanced) Develop control over shading, line quality, and detail to create highly realistic drawings from still life and photo reference. I’ll show you how to break down complex subjects into manageable steps.

Anatomy & Figure Drawing (Technical Option) For students who want a deeper, more technical approach, I offer in-depth instruction in anatomy and figure drawing, with special focus on the biggest challenge of all: heads and hands.

Or if you have your own project or questions you’d like to focus on, I’m here for that as well.

In your first lesson we’ll discuss your interests and goals, and assess your current level. From there we can determine a plan for how I can best help with your creative pursuits!

Lessons are available online or in person, at your home. I am based in the Highland Park area and can travel up to 20 miles for an added fee.

Ideally we will work in 2-hour sessions ($76 total) to give us enough time to settle in and make some good progress. This is particularly important if we are painting.
