About Harry

I completed my BSc in Mathematics at Warwick University around 8 years ago, and since then have gone on to become a director of an award-winning logistics company that specialises in using Maths to create complex, innovative solutions.

I have an executive masters degree in Logistics from Cranfield University (a leading international business school), where, largely by applying mathematics, I was able to set some all-time records, finish top of my class and win the Course Directors Prize for Outstanding Performance. Last year, this achievement, alongside my companies success and the winning of a national award for logistics innovation lead to me being confirmed as one of the youngest Chartered Logisticians in the World.

I have been tutoring and teaching mathematics for over 11 years and have taught in state schools in the UK, as well as teaching classes of up to 60, as well as carrying out teacher training, in township schools in South Africa. I have extensive experience of teaching mathematics to adults, having spent the last few years setting up an Academy within my business.

I tutor part-time because I believe that Mathematics is beautiful and misunderstood, and I like to believe that by sharing my knowledge and passion for my subject, I might be able to encourage a few others to find the same joy I do in it.

I am a firm believer that to be interesting and understandable, maths has to be described in a way that students can relate to, and preferably are interested in. Unfortunately, the large majority of people find mathematics (at least) slightly terrifying, and therefore, I generally base all of my examples and teachings in subjects that my students are particularly interested in.

In the past, this has lead to all sorts of interesting tutorial sessions, including monitoring zombie outbreaks using frequency diagrams, using graph theory to see whether free-kicks hit the wall or even, calculating the probability of a Love Island contestant actually finding love.

By tailoring every session specifically to my students, generally, engagement and enjoyment of the sessions increase, which usually then results in a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.

I believe in staying with a topic until it has been grasped and forming a firm foundation, before moving on. In my experience, much of the fear and struggles that students encounter are based upon gaps in their foundations, which prevent them from extending their learning properly.

In a nutshell, I try to make lessons as enjoyable, and free from fear as possible. Students are encouraged to make mistakes and to ask as many questions as they need to.

I love working with students of any level, however, am only able to offer remote tutorials provided through a specialist screen sharing and webcam software.
