About Peter

I've been working as a musician professionally since I was 14 years old. I started on the tuba (never went pro with that one) and then moved to bass guitar, double bass, guitar and singing. I've been a full time musician for a little over 5 years now. My main living is from playing in bars and restaurants, and I typically have one or two students who I meet with weekly. I absolutely love teaching, and I would like to help beginners and intermediate players get to a point where they're comfortable playing in front of a crowd.

About the lesson

My teaching method:

-ESTABLISH GOALS, this is the student directed part. What do you want out of this? What styles appeal to you? What role do you see yourself playing musically? solo acoustic performer? bassist in a band?

-DIAGNOSIS, what do you already know? what technical abilities do you already have? are you a total noob or do you have a little bit of technique already?

-HABIT FORMATION, now we have an idea of what the path looks like and approximately where we are on that path, so we start taking steps toward our goals. The idea here is to keep it fun and exciting. We do this by forming good habits, never biting off more than we can chew (avoiding burnout!), and making slow steady progress. I advocate for practicing no more than ten minutes a day in the beginning, and we build from there. I've found that the slow steady progress becomes addictive.

-PRO SUPPORT (optional), at a certain point on the path we'll start talking about really striking at our professional goals. Do you want to book gigs and get paid? Do you want to form a band for fun? Would you like to start writing music on your instrument? All of this is on the menu if you want it.

Just want to discuss pricing here. 40/hr is well below my rate for playing in bars, and I'm not hurting for bar work. The reason I'm willing to lower my hourly rate in order to teach is because I enjoy it, and one of the main reasons I became a pro musician is because I want to enjoy my work. I'm really looking for dedicated students who are excited to learn, if that's you then let's do it!
