About Esmond
I have experience of a broad range of learning environments and teaching styles, including home education, the Oxbridge tutorial format and classroom-style teaching in both the private/grammar and state/academy sectors.
I worked as a Teaching Assistant at Chelsea Academy, London, in 2013-14 as part of RGS Guildford’s Outreach Scheme there. In a classroom setting, I have led and assisted classes for year groups and ability levels from year 7 to GCSE and top to bottom sets. I have also provided mentoring to Oxbridge applicants. I have further developed creative teaching skills in the course of directing work undertaken for both music and the stage, and clear and engaging communication of content and ideas through delivering talks and presentations (on topics ranging from the Catholic Reformation and the Glorious Revolution to Irish and Scandinavian faery tales and folk literature and the Old East Slavic ‘Song of Igor’s Campaign’) in seminars in the course of my own studies.
I'm currently a History finalist at the University of Oxford. Besides history, my degree has also involved substantial interdisciplinary work with literature, the visual arts, music and folklore, and language work in Latin, French, Italian and Middle English. Three of my seven Finals papers have been in art history, and my thesis research focuses on medieval literature, presenting an intertextual reading of Arthurian romances and chronicles in Old French, Middle English, Middle High German and Medieval Latin. I also took a foreign text paper in Carolingian and Insular Latin in my first year. I have extensive knowledge of literature, history, history of art, classical culture and music, and proficiency in Latin, French and Italian, the first of which I also studied to A-Level. I share details of and blog about medieval and Renaissance Italian art, drawing on my own travels in Italy, at (concealed information) and (concealed information)
I have extensive industry experience in music, as a composer, director, producer and singer, and in the creative arts more broadly, informing my teaching in these and related areas. I produced and artistically directed my first opera production, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, in 2016, with an international cast of singers from leading British and European conservatoires, and I’m currently Artistic Director and co-Musical Director of the semi-professional early music and early opera ensemble, Theatron Oneiron, which I founded as a first-year undergraduate. As a freelance composer, my compositions have won and finalised in national and high-profile university competitions, and been performed by such artists as the BBC Singers. I’m also a classically trained, semi-professional singer, currently a Choral Exhibitioner in the Choir of The Queen’s College and formerly a Choral Scholar at Guildford Cathedral and Exeter College Chapel Choir, and member of the Iken Scholars as well as many other ensembles; and I frequently perform as a recitalist and as a soloist in oratorios and opera productions. In art and design, my experience encompasses both artistic and technical drawing, and product design, poster design, and production design for the stage, and my previous work includes designing and manufacturing an award-winning scaled model and card model kit of Guildford Cathedral.

I tutor Latin, History, History of Art and Music to A-Level.
I tutor English Language and Literature, the Graphic Design route within Design and Technology, and Maths to GCSE/IGCSE. (See my separate ads for Music, DT and Maths for further details on these subjects.)
I provide mentoring, including guidance on personal statements, submitted work, admissions tests and interviews, for students applying to study History or its joint schools at Oxbridge and other universities.
More broadly, I can help students to develop essay writing, problem-solving, research and study skills.
My experience encompasses a range of teaching styles and learning environments, including home education, project- and inquiry-based learning, the Oxbridge tutorial format, and classroom-style teaching in both the private grammar and state academy sectors.
In my own teaching, I combine two broad approaches: the greater scope for intellectual flexibility and curiosity, and the heightened freedom to range across subjects or pursue individual topics in greater depth according to each student’s interests, prominent in university- or home education-style learning; and a rigorous and comprehensive attention to exam syllabi designed to ensure that the understanding and knowledge my students develop remain carefully targeted towards securing their desired grades in any traditional summative assessments such as GCSEs or A-Levels.
My teaching is student-centred: the best tutoring, in my view, is that which guides and facilitates the student in their own learning journey, in contradistinction to traditional teacher-led instruction. I work with each student to tailor lessons to their individual priorities (whether those be understanding subject material, exam content, or honing particular skills such as analysis or argument) and learning style. I place particular emphasis on developing a deep-seated intrinsic passion for learning for its own sake in my students and on encouraging them to think independently and critically and, ultimately, originally. I am, moreover, dedicated to seeing palpable improvement in each of my students and will always put in extra effort, for example through taking time in preparation to track down particular useful resources and additional reading or through running overtime, to achieve this end.
