About Alex

My goal is to ensure you are set up for success on your exams, and for all your math courses in the future. I scored 5's on AP exams for Calculus AB and Calculus BC, 750 on Math SAT and 740 on SAT II Subject Test. I also took advanced college math courses at Princeton including Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, so I know what it takes to succeed in math from college entrance exams to college courses. My interests: Filmmaking - Since graduating from Princeton, I have become a writer-director. My recent short film went to 11 film festivals, was nominated at 4 and received awards at 2! I am finishing up another short film, and will be sending it to film festivals in 2025. Rock climbing and backpacking - At Princeton, I was a backpacking trip leader and rock climbing gym worker, and have kept up with both sports. I have since backpacked 500 miles of the Appalachian Trail and 100 miles in Patagonia, Chile, including the O Loop. I also boulder 2 times a week.

About the lesson

I work with students on:
- building foundational knowledge: making sure we cover any holes in understanding that didn't quite get the first time
- advanced concepts: understanding material deeply so student will be able to solve problems/find correct answers in many forms
- answer elimination: eliminating wrong answers to narrow choices
- speed strategies: working smarter not harder
- and answering questions more quickly
- grammar lessons to build understanding of grammar principles for Writing section of SAT & English section of ACT

How I teach:
For the ACT and SAT, I have my students take real ACT/SAT tests at home and we go over them in class. When they miss a problem, I use the scaffold method to review. I will have them attempt the problem on their own, if they are unable to solve, I walk them through a lesson and have them try similar problems with me. Once they feel confident, we try the original problem together. I also supplement this material with outside problems based on my student's needs/

For math, I review homework, practice tests, or past tests with students. If they are having trouble with lessons from the week, I reteach them using other examples and approaches and create additional problems that we can work through together.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my individual approach to each student. I try to meet students where they are and incorporate some of their interests into our lesson plans/examples. It's important to me that students see how the work they're doing in school applies to the real-world and their extracurriculars. This helps build curiosity and excitement around learning.
