About Jonathan

My experience combines doctoral research at Princeton University, international archival research between Germany, Mexico, Spain and Cuba, and teaching at Princeton University, Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, and Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero in Argentina, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. My interdisciplinary work spans Global and Oral History, Cultural Studies, Literature, and the Humanities. I also hold a postgraduate certificate in Critical Museology from the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and a certificate in Leadership Principles from Harvard Business School Online.

I teach in Spanish, English, and German, and I can also work with students in multilingual academic contexts thanks to my experience with Portuguese and Italian.

I am a researcher and educator with a PhD in Spanish & Portuguese from Princeton University, specializing in cultural history, cultural studies, literature, oral history, and international cultural networks connecting Spain, Latin America and East Germany.

I offer individualized academic mentoring in the Humanities for committed and passionate high school, undergraduate, and graduate students who want to develop their own research projects, strengthen their analytical skills, or explore a particular area in greater depth. I also work with students who want to develop their language skills through cultural analysis, moving beyond the traditional formats of language teaching.

My mentoring is designed for students who want to cultivate genuine critical thinking, intellectual independence, and a deeper engagement with language and culture—not simply learn how to “hack” academic conventions or techniques.

HUMANITIES MENTORING

I can mentor students working on projects related to:

• Global history and cultural history
• Oral history and memory
• Cultural Studies
• Literature and literary analysis
• Latin American and Hispanic Studies
• Film and visual culture
• Migration, exile, and diasporas
• The Cold War and international cultural relations
• Archival and primary-source research

Mentoring can begin with a broad idea or area of interest and develop into a focused, independent research project.

We can work together on:

• developing a research question
• narrowing down a topic and designing a research project
• developing a research methodology
• designing oral history interviews
• working with oral testimonies, archival materials, and primary sources
• finding and evaluating academic literature
• developing a strong argument
• structuring and writing a research paper
• revising and strengthening academic writing
• preparing presentations and independent research projects

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED & ACADEMIC SPANISH

I also offer Spanish lessons for intermediate and advanced students.

If your goal is simply to improve your Spanish, we can do so through an engaging methodology that incorporates literary analysis and film discussion. This approach draws on a flipped classroom model that I have tested at Princeton University, allowing students to engage with materials independently before using our sessions for conversation, interpretation, and active practice.

Beyond conversation and fluency, we can work specifically on:

• Academic Spanish
• Writing and argumentation in Spanish
• Reading complex literary and historical texts
• Spanish for research
• Spanish for university and graduate students
• Spanish for students preparing to study or conduct research in Spain or Latin America

As a native Spanish speaker and internationally trained scholar, I can work with students who need to use Spanish in intellectual, academic, or professional contexts.

MY APPROACH

My goal is not simply to provide information or correct a paper. I want to help you learn how to conduct research, formulate meaningful questions, and develop your own arguments.

Sessions are tailored to each student's level, interests, and project. They can take the form of structured lessons, individual consultations, or ongoing mentorship.

If you have a research question, a project you want to develop, or simply an area of the Humanities you would like to explore in greater depth, I can help you turn your curiosity into a meaningful learning experience—whether that means developing a research project, strengthening your critical-thinking and analytical skills, engaging more deeply with history, literature, and culture, or learning Spanish through intellectually stimulating conversations.
