About Adrien
I've worked in astronomy and education for over 15 years - as a journalist, research telescope operator, stargazing guide, planetarium manager. Always with the same burning passion for astronomy. On top of my professional activities, I have been giving various talks to astronomy gatherings about dark sky preservation and amateur astronomical research. Based in New Zealand, I contribute to planetary defense efforts on every clear occasion, and am the second most active MPC observer in the country in 2025 (observatory code R56).

This course, originally an in-person event, was adapted to a series of 1h online sessions covering all the basics of practical astronomy. At the end of the course, students should have all the tools and knowledge to get their own Minor Planet Center observatory code and start submitting scientific measurements. I favor a tutoring approach, actively exchanging with the students, including questions and exercises on some topics to help develop practical skills. The course covers the following topics: - Equipment introduction (overview of available cameras and telescopes, understanding pixel scale, etc.) - Image acquisition, calibration and reduction (taking good images with your equipment and squeezing data out of them) - Image analysis introduction (astrometry vs photometry, intricacies of FITS files, etc.) - Minor Planet Center and Near Earth Objects I (what are NEOs, how to look for them, and how to image them) - MPC and NEOs II (how to produce an accurate measurement from a set of images) - Photometric observations (through the case study of an exoplanet transit)
