About Mhairi

Currently I am studying for a MSc (by research) in History at the University of Edinburgh. In 2021, I graduated from my undergraduate degree at UofE with first-class honours.

I am happy to tutor on the SQA English syllabus at National 5 and Higher level. Having studied the SQA English qualifications myself, I understand what is needed to excel in them. Experienced as a tutor, my track record is helping pupils to reach their goals and improve their grades for the final exam.

I have experience of youth work with children aged five to eighteen, as well as experience of tutoring in English and German. Previously I have taught S1 history and S2 German culture lessons. I am a member of the PVG scheme and I am Disclosure Scotland checked. Please let me know if you would like further details about this.

I thoroughly enjoy working with pupils helping them develop their engagement with English and the literature texts they are studying. I hope to help them reach their potential!

About the lesson

I approach each student individually creating a lesson plan which best suits your needs. I am happy to tutor 1:1 or to a group (up to 5 people max). I can offer lessons virtually (via Zoom) or in person.

Lessons are varied depending on what students would like to work on and the age group involved.

National 5 and Higher lessons include interactive activities to help with close reading & Scottish text techniques as well as essay practice for the Critical Reading sections. When prelims and exams get closer the focus will turn to revision questions and past papers. I try to keep lessons fun and engaging that way students enjoy their learning and get as much as they can from the experience.

For literacy pupils (ranging from children to adults) lessons can take a much more informal approach. In these lessons depending on the goals to be achieved, sessions can incorporate guided reading, writing games, speaking and grammar exercises to name just a few examples. These lessons would be suitable for those struggling to get to grips with literacy in school and English learners wanting to improve their skills and gain experience.

Details

In person lessons are charged at £22ph with lessons taking place on Zoom at £18ph for all levels. I am happy to arrange group lessons for any level, with the cost being split equally between the number of attendees.
