About Joseph
I am an experienced and highly dedicated tutor with an excellent success rate in helping students of all ages prepare for their exams.
I have over five years of tutoring experience guiding students in 11+ Verbal Reasoning, SATs English and GCSE English preparation. Many of my Year 5 students have gone on to Watford Grammar and Aldenham, while I have a proven track record of securing grades 7-9 for high-achieving GCSE pupils, with a minimum of grade 4 for pupils who find English challenging. Particularly, I have helped students aged 13-16, who have come to England from abroad, in passing their GCSE English exams.
My experience has given me a comprehensive, applicable understanding of exam expectations and success criteria. Beyond this, I have a proven ability to translate mark schemes into clear, memorable technique that is accessible for my students.
I hold a master’s with distinction in creative writing from the University of Chester. I received a distinction in every module, and I’ve written and published fiction in various magazines. I’m also currently working on a novel, so I’m always engaged with the subject.
Why do I teach? To share my passion and see that spark in others! I love to see students not just make progress but discover the same intrigue and appreciation for the subject that I have.

A typical first lesson with me will include an assessment so that I can tailor-make future lessons to align closely with the support my student requires. I work with patience, and my goal is not just to help them pass their exams but to foster an enjoyment of English. After all, we use it in every aspect of our lives.
During our lessons, there will be regular testing to ensure students have fully grasped any concepts I have covered. As is usual for my current students, at the end of every month parents will receive a report on their child's progress, and a chance to discuss next steps going forward.
Before any examination, it is important to practice under exam conditions in real-time. Three months before exams, I will review and revise exam techniques from the start of our lessons together. We complete custom-made papers under time to ensure any weak spots are addressed and students are well-prepared, ready not just with knowledge but with proper expectation and execution.
