About Freya

I am a piano tutor with over 7 years of teaching experience. I work with school and college students of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced players. I have successfully taught between 200 and 250 students. Many of my students have cleared graded exams with distinction, performed in recitals, and developed strong musical skills. My teaching philosophy is centered on real-life application, accountability, flexibility, creativity, and integrity. I believe that learning piano should be practical and enjoyable. I use examples from professional performances to explain concepts. I hold students accountable for their practice but I am always flexible and supportive. I encourage creativity through improvisation and personal interpretation. I focus on building strong technique, sight-reading, music theory, and ear training. I also teach expression and stage presence. I am honest about progress and set realistic goals. I am proud of my students' growth and confidence. My goal is to inspire a lasting love for piano.

"My teaching approach for piano is built on five core values: real-life examples and case studies, accountability, flexibility, creativity, and integrity. I believe that learning piano should be practical, enjoyable, and meaningful. My goal is to help students become confident, independent musicians who understand and love what they play. Real-life examples and case studies are central to my teaching. I do not just teach theory in isolation. I show students how professional pianists use techniques in actual performances. I use recordings, videos, and live demonstrations to explain phrasing, touch, and interpretation. I also share stories from my own journey and from past students to make lessons relatable. When a student struggles with a concept, I refer to similar cases I have encountered and explain how we solved them together. Accountability is another pillar of my studio. I help students set clear, realistic goals. I track their progress and follow up on their practice. I hold them responsible for their commitments but I do it with kindness, not pressure. I also hold myself accountable by preparing thoroughly for each lesson and giving honest, constructive feedback. Flexibility ensures that I adapt to each student's unique pace, schedule, and learning style. Some students learn quickly and want to move fast. Others need more time and repetition. I adjust my teaching methods, materials, and lesson structure to fit each individual. Creativity is encouraged in every lesson. I want students to do more than just play what is written. I teach them how to add expression, dynamics, and personal interpretation. I also introduce improvisation and composition so they can create their own music. This keeps lessons fresh and exciting. Integrity means I am honest and transparent. I do not inflate progress or promise quick results. I set realistic expectations and explain the reasoning behind every exercise. This builds trust and ensures students feel respected.

My methodology covers a broad range of piano subjects. Technique is a primary focus. I teach proper posture, hand position, finger independence, and articulation. I use scales, arpeggios, and exercises like Hanon and Czerny to build control and evenness. Sight-reading is developed through consistent practice. I use graded materials to help students recognize notes, rhythms, and patterns quickly. This reduces reliance on memorization and builds reading fluency. Music theory is integrated into every lesson. I teach note reading, intervals, chords, key signatures, and harmonic analysis. I show students how theory applies directly to the pieces they play. This helps them learn faster and understand music at a deeper level. Ear training is included to strengthen listening skills. I use interval recognition, chord identification, and rhythmic dictation to develop relative pitch. Repertoire is selected to match each student's taste and level. I guide them through classical, jazz, pop, blues, and film music. I teach phrasing, dynamics, and expression to make their playing musical and engaging.

Improvisation and composition are offered for students who are interested. I teach basic chord progressions and scale patterns to help them create melodies and arrangements. Sight-playing and lead sheet reading are also covered. These are practical skills for playing in bands or accompanying others. Each lesson is structured but flexible. We start with warm-ups and technical exercises. Then we move to sight-reading and theory. The main part of the lesson focuses on repertoire and applying techniques. I end with a review and a clear practice plan for the week. I use recordings and playback to help students hear their progress. I assess regularly and adjust goals accordingly. My ultimate aim is to produce pianists who are skilled, creative, and confident. I want my students to enjoy playing and continue learning on their own with joy."
