About Michael

I’m a piano teacher with over 20 years' experience. I have degrees from Leeds University, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music. In piano, I specialise in young beginners, using age-appropriate tutor books, and fun theory books. I also have a lot of experience dealing with the challenges and rewards of learning piano as an adult - both for returners to the instrument and for those starting from scratch. I have a lot of experience helping students prepare for really successful ABRSM exams, including working on sight-reading and aural tests (often neglected areas). In all cases, we start with strong technical foundations and a strong mental approach, building confidence based on solid achievement, not mere wishful thinking! I’m positive, encouraging and committed to helping each learner progress.

About the lesson

Piano lessons with me are structured, enjoyable lessons, tailored to each student. My approach blends clear technical foundations with engaging, age-appropriate methods, especially for young beginners. With degrees from Leeds, the Royal Northern College of Music and The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, I have 20+ years' experience helping piano students progress confidently, whether learning for fun or preparing for ABRSM exams. Lessons for beginner kids use age-appropriate teaching materials, including lots of stickers! Lessons for adult beginners focus on popular Classics, pop or jazz depending on the learner's wishes. ABRSM exam prep is structured to achieve a solid, reliable exam result for the student, and includes the often-neglected areas of Aural Tests and Sight-reading at a refined level. I teach students locally in Welwyn Garden City, especially in the Handside and AL8 area. I also teach students from Hatfield, St Alban's, Harpenden, Potters Bar and Stevenage.

Please note: the free first session is a short 10–15 minute voice call to discuss goals and ensure a good fit, not a full lesson.
