About Michal

About Me

I have been playing the piano since 1996.

* I have 12 years of formal music education in Poland, combining general schooling with intensive musical training.
* Studied Piano Performance at the Royal College of Music, London, with individual piano tuition, chamber music, historical keyboard performance (harpsichord and fortepiano), and the Alexander Technique.
* Currently continuing my piano studies through Juilliard Extension at The Juilliard School in New York City.
* Prizewinner at an international piano competition in Paris
* Performance experience in Poland, Germany, France and the United States
* 10+ years of teaching individual students of different ages, personalities and learning styles
* Steinway & Sons Educational Partner

I developed my musical skills during masterclasses conducted by Leon Fleisher, Alfred Brendel, Andras Schiff, Emanuel Ax, Jacques Rouvier, Barry Douglas, Sofya Gulyak, Lang Lang, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydron, Andrzej Jasinski and others, which gave me a broad view of approaches to technique, sound, and interpretation.

Classical music is also central to my life outside teaching. I regularly attend concerts and opera in New York and travel to major European festivals, including Salzburg, Bayreuth and Lucerne. Staying actively engaged with performance is an important part of my own musical development.

Whether you are starting, returning after a break, or seeking more demanding musical guidance, my lessons are built around your level, goals, and musical interests.

I don’t just teach students to play the right notes. The aim is to develop what makes independent, confident music-making possible: technique, sound, listening, efficient practice, stylistic awareness and interpretation. The atmosphere is friendly, focused and non-judgmental, and the goals are always clear.

Who the Lessons Are For

Whether you are playing your first notes, returning to the piano after twenty years, working toward an exam or audition, or simply want to take your playing to a higher level, these lessons are for you. Adult beginners are especially welcome, and we can structure lessons from the start around how adults learn.

How I Teach

No single method works for every pianist, so I customise lessons for each student. Depending on your needs, we may work on:

Technique. A healthy, efficient approach to the instrument: coordination, evenness, articulation, voicing, tone production, and scales or exercises where useful. Technique serves the music and is never taught as an isolated set of drills.

Repertoire and interpretation. Not only what is in the score, but how and why the music works: phrasing, colour, balance between voices, rhythm and pulse, pedalling, harmony and structure, and differences of style between composers and periods. The goal is your own informed musical judgment, not imitation of the teacher.

Learning how to practise. Most progress happens between lessons. Instead of “practise more,” you will leave each lesson knowing what to practise, how and why: breaking passages into solvable problems, choosing tempos, slow and analytical work, memorisation strategies and planning your week.

Repertoire. I mainly teach classical music, from Bach through Romantic and 20th/21st-century repertoire, and repertoire is chosen to fit your abilities, technical needs, interests and long-term goals. You are welcome to bring pieces you want to study, and I will suggest others where they develop a particular skill.

What You Receive

Regular students get more than the lesson itself:

* An individually planned learning direction
* Repertoire recommendations and technical exercises where appropriate
* Clear practice goals between lessons
* Annotated scores and lesson notes when useful
* Feedback on practice recordings, by agreement
* Preparation strategies for performances, auditions or exams

Performance Opportunities

Performing is always optional. Students who want a concrete goal can work toward informal studio performances and recitals as they become available, subject to scheduling and venue. Online students can take part in virtual studio performances.

For students preparing to perform, lessons can include repertoire choice, a realistic preparation timeline, full run-throughs, managing nerves, recovering from mistakes, stage etiquette, mock performances and post-performance feedback.

As a Steinway & Sons Educational Partner, I'm also able to arrange occasional performance and educational opportunities at Steinway Hall in New York City, including lessons on a concert-level Steinway Model B fitted with the Spirio system. These sessions let students experience a phenomenal instrument firsthand and, in a masterclass-style setting, draw on recordings and performances by some of the greatest pianists through Spirio's playback. These visits can happen from time to time, as availability allows.

If your travels bring you to NYC, online students are welcome to join a studio performance or experinece a lesson at Steinway Hall.

Your First Lesson: Complimentary Assessment

New students begin with a complimentary 45-minute assessment lesson. It is not an audition. It helps me understand where you are now and what will be most useful for you. We may: - Talk about your musical background, goals and repertoire interests. - Hear one or more pieces you are currently playing. - Look at basic technical habits and, where relevant, sight-reading. - Identify strengths and areas to develop. - Sketch a practice plan and what regular lessons could look like. Complete beginners do not need to prepare anything. Afterwards, I will suggest a realistic direction and answer your questions.
