About Cherry

I studied music and education at Dartington College Of Arts and Rolle Teacher Training College for three years to become a qualified teacher of music and other subjects.
I started as a class music teacher with other subjects and became an instrumental teacher for classes of adults and in schools.
I have also performed for most of my career including some of my own compositions
I have prepared about six hundred students both adults and children for face-to-face and digital music exams mostly for Trinity College and most of them have attained a merit or distinction.
However most of my students prefer to learn music without taking exams.

I teach online and at my house which has planning permission for business use.  I live in the Bognor Regis area.
For piano and keyboard and music theory I mostly recommend a set order of books which I know will help students to learn to read and play gradually to achieve a solid foundation to build upon.  There is a much wider choice after the basic books.  Students play on my Kemble piano separated by a clear plastic screen from the Yamaha digital piano that I play on.

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I loved music as a young child and played the family piano before having piano lessons. I also liked listening to our antique Polyphon music box.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

I like listening to pretty love songs which have lovely melodies.
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

Probably the music theory examination courses after the first few grades.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

For myself I find the violin difficult partly because of the posture and I find that playing with vibrato on the violin doesn’t come naturally to me like it does on the guitar and ukulele.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

I try hard to keep my timetable organised and to have a wide range of music books to recommend for encouraging structured and interesting learning. I include some popular music as well as classical music.
  • 6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Richard Clayderman, Bryan Adams and Joan Baez. I would like them to play and sing for me.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

When I was studying music at Dartington College of Arts, the Minister for the Arts Jennie Lee was visiting and she asked me about my very modern piece of musical equipment. This was a reel-to-reel tape recorder.
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I try to encourage students of all ages and abilities to enjoy playing music and to achieve their goals.
