About Kiana

I started playing the piano when I was 5 and have been playing for 23 years now. After finishing my training at the conservatory of music, I started giving private piano, music theory, and voice lessons and have worked with students from complete beginner to advanced levels. I have prepared many students for recitals, musical theater, and group performances and do enjoy accompanying them on the stage if we ever have the chance! I have had the opportunity to work with thriving music studios such as Studio Vivian, Sarv Academy, and Pars Institute in the past, and have the privilege of being a part of an amazing network of people who are passionate about music education and having a good time :) ~~Music is forever~~

Learning to read music is fun, essential, and can unimaginably expand your musical abilities. I use the RCM method (Royal Conservatory of Music) for folks who are interested in classical and contemporary styles, and the Alfred adult method for those interested in more popular and folklore styles. We use Hanon to quickly develop a comfortable posture, and play scales, chords, and arpeggios to understand the building blocks of music. Each week, we also work on a bunch of pieces tailored to your interests from our method books, online open archives, or your list of all-time favorites!

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I started playing the Piano when I was 5. My dad bought me John Thompson's easiest piano course books and I finished them in a week. "Huh, I guess you're interested in Piano then!" he said. I went on to take classical piano lessons at the conservatory of music all the way as well as coaching myself for the next 21 years. In the meanwhile, I joined the youth choir and discovered I also enjoy singing, an interest that I developed more professionally by taking opera voice lessons and performing with several choirs and bands as soloist/vocalist. In my twenties, I developed an interest for other instruments such as Ocarina, Flute, Kalimba and Cello, as well as other genres like jazz, ambient, alternative rock, fusion and modern classical music.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

Music is a part of my identity that never changes. It is my safe place in this bizarre world. I simply couldn't live without it. It might be the purest thing that we, as human beings, have ever created. There is no certainty in this world, but I could easily believe music is forever!
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

My true passion in life is creating knowledge, or passing it on so someone else can create it one day, or pass it along. It is this chain effect of knowledge sharing that makes my heart beat faster. That is why for me the most honorary work is to teach, because I believe education is the only thing powerful enough to save us all.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

One of my university professors changed my view towards education and how we communicate in class. He used to mime, use peculiar visual aids, and give us temporary roles in class to showcase the power of knowledge communication. The next semester, I became his teaching assistant, learned how to go beyond traditional teaching methods and think bigger than institutional standards.
  • What are your keys to success?

I believe "success" is a subjective and complex concept to define, as it is different for each one of us. For me personally, success is not about money, fame or power. It is knowing that I have reached my true potential and cannot do better. It is only then that I feel "happy" and satisfied with myself. Keys to achieving this would be to write down my vision/mission statement, learn more about myself everyday, accept my strengths and weaknesses, and come up with short term/long term strategies that will get me where I want to be while making sure I am enjoying my life!
