About Cristina

My name is Cristina, and I’m based in Bishop’s Stortford. I graduated with a BMus 1st Honours degree (cello/piano) in my native country, Brazil.

After graduating, I received a British Council Scholarship to study at the postgraduate performance course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where I studied for two years.

My teaching experience spans over 30 years, and in addition to teaching both cello and piano, I’ve coached chamber music and conducted string ensembles and children’s orchestras.

Through teaching, I developed an interest in understanding music from a cognitive perspective, which led me to pursue a BSc in Psychology. My dissertation, which focused on children’s aural cognition, intertwined with my studies in music.

After graduating in psychology, I put the academic qualities gained into practice through work with autistic children and in my music teaching methodology. I taught at an independent school for 17 years, both at the prep and senior school. I also introduced after-school music initiation clubs to primary school children, using the Kodaly method, which introduces pre-school children to sounds, rhythms and instruments through playful group activities.

Alongside my music teaching, for the past 8 years, I have worked with SEN students in secondary schools and children with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities, including visual impairment.

I’m also interested in the role of piano playing in therapy, particularly in neuroplasticity and lifelong learning, as well as the effect of learning an instrument on ageing brains and how music can help reduce stress and anxiety and promote social interaction.

About the lesson

My lessons are adapted to students’ individual learning styles, age and ability.

They are fun and engaging, combining technique and theory with fun games and interactive learning.

While the goal for school-age children is to develop solid technique on an instrument, prepare for exams, and understand music theory, the pedagogy and session structure for preschool-aged children emphasise exploration, movement, and listening skills.

Teaching adults requires a tailored approach that respects individual personal goals and busy lifestyles.

I aim to take a flexible, holistic and creative approach to teaching, truly focused on student-centred growth, and to use a methodology that is both research-based and experience-driven.

I also hold an enhanced DBS check.

Individual lessons are typically 30 or 60 minutes.

Shared lessons are between 30 and 40 minutes, and for very young children, a 20-minute lesson may be appropriate.
