About Amber

Hi, My name is Amber and I am a Physics degree graduate and a Renewable energy degree graduate. I always enjoyed school and choose my higher education path not with a career in mind but just by following what I loved studying most . Throughout my studies I was luckily enough to have opportunities to work as a teaching assistant and to be a first aid trainer and to run study groups and found I really enjoyed this too.

My style of tutoring comes from my own experience of being dyslexic whilst studying. I often found that written explanations of things in text books just didn't help me. And that learning list of facts was almost impossible. But luckily I was able to find what did work me and learned how to shift the perspective on problems I was stuck on. I began making decks of snap cards to learn historical events and their corresponding dates, domino games for physics key word and their definitions, jigsaw puzzles for chemical pathways and many more! I was often told my solutions to math problems were unusual but worked.

I know that learning can be the most enjoyable thing when it is going well but also how difficult it can be to keep going when it is not. Now I want to help other students get though the "stuck" stages too :)

About the lesson

I am looking to give targeted tutoring on topics and specific questions a student brings to me as well as study and revision advice.

My experience is that once we are "stuck" it can be very difficult to think of anything else.

My aim is to help students who are stuck, so that they can move on and continue more insightful learning. I believe a key part of this is helping the student break down the problem themselves and identifying gaps in their understanding that caused the being "stuck" in the first place. However, I also understand that sometimes an entire lesson is not the most effective teaching when all we need is quick explanation to a unusually worded math exam question!

I am flexible and casual to work with and will help the student though whichever activity they feel will be most productive. This could include; working through specific questions, looking through past exam papers and mark schemes, preparing revision materials (I have a particular skill in making games and puzzles to revise with as this was very beneficial to me even at degree level) as well as general exam technique and anything else the student my be "stuck" on :).

I have many years of study experience though my a levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, my BSc in Physics and my MSc in renewable energy. I also have experience in giving small presentations and running study sessions for both secondary school level and for undergraduates.

I am flexible on tutoring session length and scheduling and am happy to work with a student on one-off occasions or regularly.
