About Douglas

Hello there! I’m Douglas Rider, an experienced journalist with a passion for visual storytelling and innovation. With 35 years of expertise in photography, photo editing, and page design, I’ve dedicated my career to capturing and conveying powerful narratives through the lens. Here’s a glimpse into my journey and the skills I bring to the table:

Experience: My journey in the world of photography and media has been an exhilarating one. Currently, I serve as a Digital Projects Consultant at Newrider Media, where I’ve taken the lead in launching “Camera Slinger,” a video podcast dedicated to the world of visual journalism. I’ve also produced the “Behind the News Photographer Podcast,” featuring esteemed guests from National Geographic and Pulitzer Prize photographers. My responsibilities include guest interviews, audio editing, website management, and podcast deployment.

Visual Storytelling: Throughout my career, I’ve honed my skills in photo editing, interactive design, and art direction. My work has graced newspapers, magazines, and digital media, always aiming to tell stories that resonate with diverse audiences.

Education: I hold a Master of Science in Mass Communications and Digital Media and a Bachelor of Science in Photojournalism, both earned at San Jose State University. It was at SJSU that I was honored to be the first recipient of the Knight Fellowship, mentoring journalism students to push the boundaries of storytelling.

Leadership and Coordination: During my time as a Media Advisor at San Jose State University, I inspired student teams to leverage innovative technology for storytelling. I successfully coordinated the launch of the university’s first digital magazine and secured an Apple developer ID for SJSU, overseeing app production. Additionally, I streamlined workflow and developed an asset management system to organize over 2,100 pieces of equipment.

Effective Partnerships: I’ve thrived in creating and managing productive partnerships, such as the collaboration between San Jose State University and Adobe, where we’ve worked on enhancing digital products and accessibility.

Inclusive Storytelling: As a passionate advocate for inclusion in photography and graphic design, I’ve advised on making digital products more accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Skills: In addition to photo editing and visual storytelling, I’m proficient in project management, team leadership, page design, and a range of Adobe Creative Suite tools. I’m also well-versed in multimedia, podcasting, and new media.

Experience: My journey has taken me through roles as a Photojournalist at The Record and Arizona Daily Star, where I pioneered multimedia storytelling and strengthened collaborative teams. I also had the opportunity to intern at the San Francisco Chronicle, contributing to the development of a music festival app and interactive data visualizations.

Honors & Awards: Over the years, my dedication to photography has been recognized with accolades like an Honorable Mention in News Photography from the San Francisco Bay Area Press Photographers Association and a First Place award in General News from College Photographer of the Year.
