About Des
I am a PhD-level scientist with an interdisciplinary science backrgound. I hold a BSc in Mathematical Sciences, focusing in biomathematics and molecular biology, an MSc in biotechnology, and a PhD in Energy Science and Engineering. I am passionate about helping others intuitively understand and see the beauty in mathematics.

As a teacher, I believe it is important to commit both to preparing high quality, insightful lessons for students, as well provide opportunities for active learning and one-on-one and group discussions of the material. I view my role as a tutor to provide context and intuition to material that cannot simply be read in a textbook. Thus, I believe successful tutoring involves having a deep understanding of the material, thoughtful use of visual aids to enhance intuition, development of projects and exercises to encourage active learning, and allowing opportunities for students to ask questions on what they want extra extra help with.
