About Doug
I am a PhD neuroscientist and diagnostics R&D lead with over twenty years of applied experience across ELISA, lateral flow, and biosensor platforms. I turn complex biology and chemistry into clear, testable steps. Students and families can expect punctuality, careful preparation, and steady progress measured against their syllabus and exams.

I teach students to think like scientists. We break complex biology and chemistry into testable steps, practice reading data, and write clean explanations that hold up under review.
Problem-first coaching: start from the homework or past paper question, map the givens, define the unknowns, and choose the right tool.
Worked examples, then fade: I model one solution out loud, co-solve the next, then you solve with checkpoints.
Data literacy: quick reads of graphs, tables, and figures. We learn what the data can and cannot prove.
Lab report support: structure, claims vs. evidence, and figure prep. I teach how graders think.
Retrieval and spacing: short recall drills and mixed practice to make concepts stick.
Error analysis: review wrong answers to find patterns, then fix the root cause.
Tools: I use shared whiteboard, annotated slides, and simple Excel or GraphPad exercises for life-science problems.
A typical lesson plan (60 minutes)
Quick check-in (5 min): goals for today and a fast recall question.
Review and fix (10 min): select one recent tough problem, repair the method, and capture the rule.
New concept in action (15 min): short explanation tied to a real assay or experiment, then a worked example.
Guided practice (15 min): you solve 2–3 problems with prompts at key steps.
Independent challenge (10 min): timed question or mini data set.
Close and plan (5 min): three takeaways, next steps, and a short practice set. You leave with a written plan.
What sets me apart
Industry experience: I bring real examples from diagnostics R&D (ELISA, lateral flow, biosensors) so abstract ideas make sense.
Systems thinking: the same approach I used to debug assays becomes a repeatable study method for you.
Clear deliverables: each session ends with a concise study plan, solved exemplars, and a checklist for the week.
Who the lessons are for
High school: Biology, Chemistry, Honors, AP Biology, AP Chemistry.
College and pre-med: General Biology, General Chemistry, Biochemistry, Immunology, Physiology.
Lab courses: lab reports, figure creation, data interpretation, experimental design basics.
Early biostats for life sciences: descriptive stats, graph selection, p-values at a practical level using Excel or GraphPad.
Ideal for students who want structured sessions, concrete feedback, and steady grade gains without busywork.
