About Maiko
I hold a PhD in Mathematics from University of Ottawa (April 2021). My specialty is algebra and geometry. Originally from Japan, I travelled broadly during my 11 years of dedicated journey with math, obtaining three degrees from three different countries: Japan, UK, and Canada. Working and living with people from different backgrounds greatly trained my communication skills, and through the obstacles I faced on the way, I became eager to help others navigate their own academic journeys. I am passionate about assisting individuals to fully develop their mathematical thinking skills according to their own learning style. Throughout my four years as a PhD student, I worked one-to-one with many students at the Math Help Centre and helped them clarify their hardships and learn how to overcome them. As a woman in math, I am also a strong advocate for math and science education for girls and women.

My lessons are for the 1st year university students who are transitioning from a guided learner to a more independent learner in mathematics.
I will help you to navigate your self-study in mathematics by specifically focusing on the part that you are struggling most with and coaching you through it. In each lesson, you will have many opportunities to explain your thought process and questions to me. If you are not used to doing that, don't worry. I will help you to do that. This is the key to developing a solid understanding of the materials as well as a trust in your mathematical thinking.
You are encouraged to decide on the topic you want to focus on for each session. If you are working on a specific book or a problem set, bring them along. We will focus on a few critical questions during our time together, and I will walk you through the part that you tend to get lost on your own.
